"Volga-2110": technical characteristics, tuning

GAZ-21 "Volga" is a car with a big history. This car originates in the 50's. Serial production of the model lasted 14 years. The successor of the "twenty-first" was the next, no less legendary 24th Volga. GAZ-2110 was one of the few cars on which the automatic transmission was installed. But we will not run ahead of time. All the details about the "twenty first" look in our today's article.

Characteristic

The 21st model became the first serial "Volga", which went to the people. Previously, only the "Victory" of the GAZ M20 (development of the 40s) was produced in the USSR. However, by the time (recall, these were the 50-ies) the design of "Victory" is visibly obsolete. The automotive industry needed new developments. So, in 56 the new "Volga-2110" was born. Its technical characteristics have been significantly improved. Before the launch in the series, the car passed a lot of tests both at the training ground and in motor rallies (one of these was carried out on the route Moscow-Crimea-Moscow). In the end, GAZ-21 Volga was approved by the party leadership and personally by the secretary Zhukov. In 56 year the machine got on the conveyor.

Design

The exterior of the Volga is somewhat like the Ford Skyliner 54 years of production. And indeed, the first "Volga" has several "Americanized" appearance. The restored sample is noticeable from afar - long massive wings, a swift bonnet and the widest grille. In those years, chrome was very fashionable. It made moldings, front grille, door handles, edging windows and even hubcaps.
All this brings us to the era of the 50's. The car was produced in several colors. However, the most popular and successful, according to motorists, is white. In this color, the Volga-2110 looks even more bulky and massive.

By the way, in the early versions of the "twenty-first" we used a corporate badge in the form of a deer. It was located on the front edge of the hood. However, after a while the management of the plant decided to remove the badge and leave only inscriptions (for safety reasons for pedestrians). The machine has a decent appearance. In the restored state, she literally draws her eyes to her.

Salon

The interior of the car also looks like an American one. This is a special arrangement of the gearshift lever (on the handlebar) and a wide single-row sofa. Inside the chrome was not less than outside. Here they are decorated with almost every detail, starting with the door handles, ending with the steering wheel itself. The colors of the finishing materials are mostly light. This allowed to visually increase the already large amount of interior. The dashboard is quite simple - there are all the necessary scales. From the passenger side already then a glove compartment was provided. By the way, the front panel is made of metal. Surprisingly, it does not make noises even on bumps. That's what Soviet quality means, say fans of retro technology. Also in the cabin provided for sun visors. In addition to the main window, there was an opening window in the door. It was closed to a special lock (which was also covered with chrome). The steering wheel had no adjustments, unlike the back of the front sofa. The latter could be laid out in a horizontal position. As a result, you could get a full bed. The quality of the interior is surprising to this day. Despite the 60-year-old age, nothing falls off in the car and does not creak.

Specifications

Experimental samples were completed with an experimental 2.5-liter engine with a top-hat assembly. However, in the series this motor came out much later. Instead, the early versions of the Volga went with the same engine that was at the Victory. It is a 65-horsepower gasoline unit from the Zavolzhsky motor plant. And only in 57 year the machine was equipped with a new engine ZMZ-21. As a basis, the engine was taken from the GAZ-M20. The maximum power was increased by 5 horsepower. The volume remained the same - 2.5 liters. The "Volga-2110" gasoline pump is a classic, mechanical type. Some put here a submersible electronic, from modern "Volga". The car had good characteristics of dynamics for those years. So, the maximum speed of the car, according to passport data, is 120 kilometers per hour.

Four years after the launch, the line of power units was enlarged with a new ZMZ-21A engine. Its maximum output was 75 horsepower. All power units were equipped with two types of boxes. Among them was a mechanic and an automaton (both three stages). It was planned that automatic boxes would go to all civilian versions of the GAZ-2110. And the mechanics was intended only for taxi modifications. In practice, most of the cars with automatic transmissions went for export. In the domestic market, about 1 thousand modifications were made with automatic transmission.

Export

"Twenty-first" was one of the top 10 export vehicles of the USSR. "Volga-2110" was supplied to many countries of foreign Europe (including Scotland, Belgium and Cyprus), as well as to Cuba. The volume of exported cars is 3 thousand units a year.

All the best - abroad

An interesting fact - for export only luxury cars of "Volga-2110" cars left. They can be distinguished by a large number of chrome parts. But that is not all. Versions for the foreign market were equipped with more powerful motors. Export "Volga" were 15 horsepower more powerful than those produced for the USSR. This gave an increase in speed of 10 kilometers per hour.

Foreign journalists made various tests, during which they noted the high smoothness of the car and excellent characteristics of patency. However, the Europeans also noted shortcomings. So, this is poor handling and weak dynamics (even despite the increased power of 15 horsepower).

Diesel "Volga"

After a while, the Belgian company SA Scaldia-Volga began to produce diesel versions of the Volga-2110 cars. So, under the hood of the "twenty first" was a 65-hp unit from Rover in volume of 2.3 liters. Also the machine was equipped with French diesel engines from Peugeot with a volume of 1.9 liters. This motor developed up to 58 horsepower of power. Then this motor was installed on the 24th model of the Volga. Right-hand versions of the Volga were produced separately for England. One of these you can see in the photo below. Alas, at the moment such copies have remained only as museum exhibits.

Price

How much can I buy a rare car "Volga-2110"? The price for the car can be different. In good condition, it is difficult to find it. And if you find it on sale, then at least 5-7 thousand dollars. Sold a lot of abandoned cars, which can be taken for restoration. The price of the project will cost approximately in the amount of 1 to 3 thousand dollars (does not take into account the dismantling and assembly of the engine). "Volga-2110" with the right-hand drive and the automatic transmission is the most expensive (the price tag reaches hundreds of thousands of dollars). There are almost no such cars on sale. What is noteworthy, for the "twenty-first" hunted not only Russian fans of retro technology. The machine is distributed in many countries of Europe.

By the way, the body of the rarity "Volga" is very resistant to corrosion. You can find quite a few specimens with whole thresholds and bottom. However, the paint during this time greatly changes its properties. It cracks and grows turbid. Therefore, without complete repainting here is indispensable.

Tuning

Recently, not only the restoration of such cars has become very popular. Often "Volga-21" is bought "under the project". One of the directions of tuning is "Stance". Such a car has changed chassis characteristics. First of all, this is landing. Install here the air suspension. The budget of such a decision is up to $ 700 (the cheapest ones are two-circuit systems). Retrodisk are also selected. They can be cast or standard, on flippers. In the first case, there is a variant of buying American or Japanese rare rims. However, their price will vary from 400 to 2 thousand dollars. You can finish and factory, painting them and installing rubber white flippers. It looks pretty impressive. In the photo below you can see what the restored "Volga-2110" looks like. Tuning direction "Stance" is popular among owners of classic models of VAZ. But back to the "Volga". The next revision is the motor. Often an 8-cylinder unit from GAZ-53 is installed here. This is the most budgetary option for installing the V8 under the hood. If the tuning budget allows, you can buy a Japanese UZ engine. Its maximum power is 280 horsepower. Less frequent are instances with an 8-cylinder engine from the BMW. The price of "swap" (engine replacement) is almost the same as in the case of Japanese engines, from $ 600 to $ 1200. Motorists advise to purchase engines along with all attachments. They are generators, a "scythe", a box and so on. Only in this condition will the foreign motor work as it should. Breeding it with the "Volga" box (that Japanese, that the German motor) is almost impossible.

Another non-standard solution for tuning is a cabriolet based on the factory "Volga". Look at the look of the "twenty-first" with the hinged roof (see the photo below). Such a copy can be an excellent weekend car. The car will undoubtedly attract the attention of passers-by and motorists.

Conclusion

So, we found out what the Soviet car GAZ-2110 is. As you can see, the car has an interesting story. Perhaps, this is one of the few rare cars that already in the factory condition can attract the attention of the public.
