Types of time relays

The time relay is necessary for controlling the power circuits of the electric motor and providing protection against short circuits. The device allows you to precisely adjust the response time of devices in accordance with the needs of production.

On the basis of special microcircuits it is possible to carry out the time relay with own hands. Such devices are applicable in everyday life for adjusting the operating time of the washing machine or for debugging the heating period of food in the microwave oven.

With the help of a time relay, programming of switching on or switching off of automatics, lighting is carried out, and the work of machines is controlled. The electronic device includes a voltage regulator, a time set generator, a control device, an input signal amplifier, a relay element. There are several types of these devices.

Modern production realizes devices with electromagnetic slowdown. This type is used when operating on DC, delays the response time in the range from 0.07 to 0.11 seconds. If the device is designed to turn off the device, the time can be set within 0.5 - 1.4 seconds.

Relays with pneumatic deceleration are performed with an air damper and cataract. This device is capable of providing a time delay ranging from 0.4 to 180 seconds. In this case, the accuracy of the response will be no more than 10% of the indicated setpoint.

Even a mechanical time relay is programmable. Therefore, the work of any kind of device depends on how the technician will debug the triggering mechanism. Anchor types of devices function on the basis of the action of a spring, the position of which is adjusted depending on the set point. After reading the set time, the device changes the position of the contacts. With the aid of an anchor relay, it is possible to change the pickup value in the range of 0.1 to 20 seconds. In this case, the accuracy of the device is about the same as for a relay with pneumatic deceleration (equal to 10% of the setpoint).

In modern production, motor time relays are used. They include a reducer, an alternating current motor, an electromagnet and copper contacts. If the input of the device receives a signal exceeding the setpoint, the electromagnet couples the gearbox with the motor and the contacts are reset. If a fixed value disappears at the input of the time relay, the electromagnet returns to its original position and disengages the gear and motor. The time of the motor version can be adjusted from 10 seconds to 3 hours.


Electronic time relays operate on the principle of active-capacitive circuit, while they are quite reliable and accurate. This is the best solution!

All time relays serve for endurance in the implementation of complex protection in substations and households. With the help of such devices, false alarms of the automation and its signaling are excluded. Thus, high clarity in the operation of the equipment is achieved.


Today, factories and plants use microprocessor devices with time delay. Each unit of this device is responsible for a separate production line, while in the complex of the unit not only relays, but also conventional contactors and switches are realized. This approach allows you to simplify the scheme and make it more repairable.
