To help novice growers: when to dig out tulips for transplantation, so that they delight the eye every spring

There are few such amateur gardeners who do not have tulips on the site. With great impatience after long winter months, we are waiting for our favorites to blossom. And how grieved if this did not happen, or they were completely lost. That's when we begin to be interested in the causes of failure. One of the most common questions: "When to dig out tulips for a transplant and should it be done at all?"

To begin with, dig out or not. A large number of textbooks recommend doing this every year. This is necessary in order to preserve the grade of the plant. This is especially required by hybrid tulips, which lose their beauty or die if they are not dug out.

However, in practice, it is not always possible to do it on time. Experienced growers recommend in this case to extract bulbs from the soil 1 time in 2 years. And if you have planted in the garden ordinary lean tulips, they can grow in the same place up to 7 years. Naturally, over the years the plant becomes smaller or ceases to bloom, because the root system tightens the bulbs deeper into the ground, where they are not sufficiently heated by the sun's rays. Either plants grow very much and do not allow their neighbors to develop. Therefore, you still need to dig it out, and how often you do it, it's up to you.

Now back to the question of when to dig out the tulips for a transplant.

In different regions, the time may differ slightly. If you live in a mild and warm climate, digging should be done in the early days of June, if your strip is colder - at the end of this month. This is a general recommendation, the flower growers determine the moment when to dig out the tulips for transplantation, along the yellowed leaves and the stalk in its upper part - it becomes elastic and does not break. These are signs that it's time to get your precious bulbs out of the ground.

To ensure that they are well ripe and gain strength, you must cut off excess leaves, leaving the bottom two, after the tulips have blossomed. It is advisable to feed the plants during this period with fertilizer and wait until they turn yellow.

Dig better in good sunny weather, when the earth is dry. If during this period the rains and the soil are wet, the extracted bulbs must be washed (in a weak solution of manganese) and must be dried well. Prepared material should be folded into cardboard boxes or boxes with holes in 1-2 layers and hidden in a dark place until the time of planting. Tulip transplantation in autumn is the best time for this.

Classic rules for caring for tulips: the children went to school (September, October) - you can plant tulips, graduated (June) - you can dig.

Especially it will be well received by young plants. Plant the tulips when the air temperature is + 9-10 degrees. In some regions this may be October-month.
