In the Timsky district of the Kursk region, the biggest tributary of the Seversky Donets-Oskol river begins its journey. Its length is more than 470 km, and the water area occupies almost 15,000 square kilometers. Km.

The way of the river through two states

Because of these sizes, many people ask: where is the Oskol River located? Let's follow her path. The watercourse starts its movement on the Central Russian Upland (Kursk Region), then flows through the territory of the Belgorod Region (Russia). It is in this place that the borders of another state-Ukraine begin. Here she continues her journey in the Kharkov region.

origin of name

There are two most common meanings of the name "Oskol".

  • The river, according to the first version, has characteristic chips on its banks. These are white chalk cliffs. They are formed due to the fact that the stream waters wash out the chalk deposits on the right bank.
  • The second version of the origin of the name - in honor of one of the tribes living in this territory - the wasps. Proceeding from this, the word in translation from Turkic will denote the following: "wasps" - the name of the tribe, and "count" - the river. That is, word for word is the "river of the wasps".

Description of the Oskol river

The Oskol River has a relatively narrow channel - from 10 to 40 meters. However, in some areas it extends up to 300 m. The river bed is steeply winding, the flood plain is wide, often there are wetlands and even individual lakes (old people). The flow near the stream is calm, on average the indicator varies within 0.2 m / s. The bottom of the river has a restless character, a frequent phenomenon - stretches and rolling. In this regard, the depth here varies considerably from 0.4 m to 10 m (the deepest areas).

The banks of the river also differ: the left one - shallow, low, the right on the contrary, rocky and steep. There is a slight slope, 0.3 m / km, and at a distance of 600 km from the mouth of the Northern Donets it will slowly fall into its current. Type of food predominantly snow by the water flow of the Oskol River. The river is covered with ice during the cold period of the year (end of November - January). The waters are opened in March.

A bit of history

The history of this river is also interesting. In the last century, Oskol fed local residents, but not in the literal sense of the word. Here, although fish are found, the main use of the river is the transport route. He was the main link between the closest areas. Of course, this was before the railways, but then the significance of Oskol (the river) was considerable. Peter I himself, according to some traditions, fused the forest for the construction of his fleet.

The use of the Oskol River

In economic terms, the Oskol River is currently used as one of the components of the hydraulic system "Seversky Donets-Donbass". Numerous dams have been built on the canal territory.

In the 1950s, the Chervono-Oskol reservoir was built in Ukraine, which, it is worth noting, is popular with vacationers in our time. The water in it is clean, and the coastline is sheltered by dense forest (mostly pine predominates). And in the Belgorod region, too, there are reservoirs - Morkvinsky, Starooskolskoe and Novooskolskoye.

Oskol - a river rich in a variety of fish such as pike, bindweed, perch, bream and others. Pine forests are planted on the coastal territory.
