The collapse-convergence - what is it? Make the alignment

All motorists are well aware that even a minor intervention in the running gear of the car will lead to a change in the angles of the wheels, and consequently, to a change in the behavior of the car on the road. The parameters of camber-toe can also depend on other factors: rubber wear, tire pressure, backlash. Any car comes to such a state when it becomes necessary to repair the front suspension. And if you produce it yourself, then the risk is great to violate such parameters as disintegration, convergence. What such a violation can entail? The most serious consequences.

Definition

The collapse-convergence - what is hidden under this definition? This is the setting of the right wheel angle. In order to ensure good stability and controllability, the front wheels must be installed at a certain angle in relation to the suspension and body of the car.

Crumbling

Often, for the adjustment of the suspension, the term "collision-convergence" is used. What is the collapse? This is the angle between the plane in which the wheel rotates and the vertical. Negative is considered such a collapse, when the wheels of the upper side are inclined inwards. A positive camber is when the upper side of the wheels is tilted outward. Camber provides the correct position of the wheel when the suspension works. With the change in the slope of the car, the camber also changes. If the collapse is zero, then the tires wear out minimally. If negative, then the stability of the car on corners improves. In size, the right and left camber should be approximated to each other as much as possible. Otherwise, it can lead to the car driving away from the direct trajectory of the stroke, as well as to the one-sided wear of the tread pattern. This is only one part of the term "collapse-convergence".

Convergence

What is a convergence? This is the angle between the plane in which the wheel rotates and the direction of motion. It ensures the correct position of the front wheels of the car at different speeds and angles of rotation. Most often, the convergence is regulated by changing the length of the side rods of the steering wheel.

The design of the suspension of most cars makes it possible to adjust the camber, the convergence of the wheels, as well as the longitudinal inclination of the kingpin, which is the axis of rotation of the controlled wheel of the vehicle.

Caster

The longitudinal inclination of the pivot or kingpin is the angle between the projection of the line that passes through the middle of the ball bearings to a plane that is parallel to the longitudinal axis of the transport and the vertical. This tilt provides stabilization of the front wheels of the car in the direction of straight run. It is also called "caster". This is very important, since the difference in the inclination for the right and left wheels, exceeding the permissible values, can lead to a drift towards the wheel that is of less importance.

The difference in the value of the caster can be expressed by such a parameter as the difference in its slopes. The result of subtraction from the larger value of the smaller wheel should not be more than 30 minutes.

Longitudinal slope facilitates self-leveling of the wheels due to the speed of the car. Racers set this value a couple of degrees above the factory settings. This makes the course of transport more stable, and the desire to move in a straight line increases.

Characteristic signs of deviation from normal values are: the squealing of tires during the turn, the withdrawal of the car when moving to the side, the unilateral wear of the tread pattern, uneven forces with right and left turns on the steering wheel.

The corner of the movement is characterized by the rotation of the rear axle in relation to the axis of symmetry of the car. This parameter is very important and the closer its value to zero, the better. If the value is positive, it means that there is an inclination to the right, and if negative, then to the left. If there are deviations greater than the allowable values, you need to intervene urgently and adjust to normal.

Before making a camber, you need to make sure that the tires have normal pressure, the tread wear on both wheels is about the same, there is no backlash in the steering and bearings, wheel disks are not deformed, and there is no need to repair the vehicle's subframe.

Steering wheel in a straight line is uneven

This problem can be caused by several reasons:

  • Free steering is increased.
  • The car has a turning of the rear axle. That is, you need to hold a back and collapse-convergence. This will fix the situation.
  • In the collapse of the rear wheels there may be too much difference.
  • There is a difference in the pressure of the rear and front wheels.
  • There are invisible defects in the running gear that did not show up before making the alignment.

If, apart from the inclination of the rudder, there is also a diversion of transport to the side, it is necessary first to find out and eliminate the cause causing this deletion, and only then to set the correct position of the rudder.

The car leads to the side, although the alignment

What can this be in this case?

1. It is necessary to check the effect of rubber. For this, the front wheels are interchanged. If after this action the withdrawal changes direction, then the whole thing is in the rubber. You need to change all the wheels in a circle and look for the pair on which the car will go smoothly. After this, the direction of rotation of the wheels is aligned. Recently, such a reason for withdrawal is very common. And the fault is the quality of the tires.

2. The imbalance of the wheels can be increased. The wheels are twisted.

3. A check was made also of such a parameter as the wheel alignment, only on the front axle. It is also necessary to check the rear axle, since the cause of the malfunction may be in it.

4. There are some hidden violations of the chassis of the car, which were not detected before the adjustment.

Before adjusting the car did not take away, but the rubber quickly worn out, and then appeared withdrawal.

Here, as in the previous paragraph, the reason lies, most likely, in the rubber. Previously, the car was driving smoothly, as the withdrawal, which was created by rubber, was balanced by the drift created because the alignment was incorrectly executed. VAZ is prone to this. After eliminating one reason, there was a withdrawal to the side.

Stiff steering wheel

The reasons for this problem can be several:

  • Improper adjustment. We need to make the alignment again.
  • Very tight steering rods or ball bearings are installed during repair.
  • In tires, the air pressure is too low.
  • Departure of discs does not correspond to that recommended by the manufacturer.

What is the procedure for the collapse-convergence?

Many people have a question: do I need to make a break-down? For the person who has driven the car for a long time, the answer to it is obvious. Who has ever driven a car with properly adjusted wheels, he will feel the car better when driving, and will even notice the smallest deviation of the corners.

The person behind the wheel should rest and enjoy the process of driving. It was for this purpose that the engineers came up with the angles of fitting the wheels. After all, the driver on the road should be comfortable and as safe as possible.

A car that has correctly adjusted wheel alignment angles has:

  • Good exchange rate stability, that is, there are minimal deviations from rectilinear motion.
  • Good maneuverability and handling, as well as comfort when driving.
  • Less propensity to drift, as well as overturning in dangerous situations.
  • Fuel economy and minimal tire wear.
  • A good downfall.

The car, which is severely violated corners, on the contrary, can fail the driver at any time. For example, when driving on a dry surface everything can be in order, but as soon as the car gets on a slippery or wet section of the road, it can suddenly go wrong where necessary. We have to constantly adjust the car. And thus it becomes dangerous not only for the driver, but also for the surrounding transport, as well as pedestrians. Often improper adjustment leads to sad consequences. Therefore, it is better to make a break-down. VAZ is the most popular in Russia, and all the masters will easily adjust. Other brands are also well subjected to the correct adjustment of the wheel angle. In all developed countries, this is a mandatory item for technical inspection.

Another very important point is that when buying a car from the hands it is recommended to check it for the correct running gear, because most of the cars that sell are in the past subjected to accidents. There are even samples that are collected from two different halves, and they are not welded in the best way.

When to check the alignment

1. After repairing the chassis of the car, when any parts have been replaced.

2. After any work leading to a change in ground clearance.

3. If there was a withdrawal of the machine to the side or the steering wheel changed its position with rectilinear motion.

4. The car is too tightly controlled or, conversely, too easy, it does not keep the road well.

5. The tires wear out very quickly.

6. The car leads to the side when braking.

7. Poor self-rotation when leaving the turn.

8. After the process of running in a new car or in the case of buying a second-hand car.

9. If the mileage after the last adjustment is more than 15 thousand kilometers.

10. After changing tires in seasons.

Price

The cost of the collapse-convergence is not high and is available to most car owners. It should not exceed 700 rubles in the event that there is no need for plumbing work or any additional adjustment. The cost of the collapse-convergence in Moscow can reach up to 2000 rubles.
