The climate of Armenia by the seasons

The Republic of Armenia is located in Transcaucasia, has no access to the seas and oceans, while the vast majority of the territory of the state is located at an altitude of more than a kilometer above sea level. Despite the fact that the country is formally located on the latitude, corresponding to the subtropical climate, on the larger part of the territory of Armenia the climate can be more likely called the continental climate. It is characterized by a hot summer and a cold winter.

Taking into account the presence of a large number of mountains in the country, reaching more than 4 thousand meters in height, as well as plains, it becomes clear that talking about the climate of Armenia should be conducted with caution. The air temperature at an altitude of 2000-3000 m always turns out to be lower than at the foot of the mountains, and this should be corrected when getting acquainted with the climate of the country.

Winter

Despite the formal location of the country in the subtropical zone, the winter in Armenia is cold - the mountain relief is contributing to its contribution. At the same time, even in the cold period, solar activity in the region remains significant - the sunny weather in general is typical for the climate of Armenia. The coldest month is January, when an average temperature of -5 ... -7 degrees is recorded in low-lying regions, and -12 to -25 in mountainous areas, depending on altitude and other geographic conditions.

By February, the average daily temperature goes to positive values, frosts are fixed, mainly at night. The amount of precipitation in the winter varies in different regions of the country. A significant amount of snow falls in the mountains, which is normal for Armenia's climate, although this is uncharacteristic for the flat areas.

Spring

In the highlands, spring comes late - only by April. In the plains, it becomes warmer about a month earlier. The temperature can still drop to negative values, but in the daytime the thermometer stably shows +8 ... + 12 degrees. In the mountains at this time the average air temperature is still negative.

In general, one can not unequivocally answer the question of what kind of climate in Armenia, since the temperature difference, the difference in the amount of precipitation, the activity of air flows in the plains and mountains are significantly different. For example, in the south of the country there is a subtropical climate, although for most of the country, as mentioned earlier, the continental is more typical.

This leads to a significant temperature difference between the areas. For example, in May in the flat areas the air warms up to 25 degrees on average, and only up to 13 in the mountains, and there are frosts at night.

Summer

In general, summer weather is set in the last weeks of May, but in the mountains summer comes only at the end of June. The weather for the first time can be changeable, rains are observed. Later, for three months, until the end of August, the air temperature stays stable around 25-27 degrees, and in the mountains the average values are approximately 10 degrees less.

In summer in the plains, even at night, the thermometer shows values of about 20 degrees. In July and August, there is practically no rain here.

Autumn

The mild warm September smoothly flows into the moderate October and the reserved-cold November. If in the first month of autumn the weather rather resembles summer, and the temperature in the daytime sags relatively to August only a few degrees, then by November the average temperature even on the plains does not exceed 10-12 degrees. In the mountains by this time the winds are already walking and heavy snow falls out in the form of snow.

Overall rating

The peculiarity of Armenia's climate can be called its heterogeneity due to the peculiarities of the relief. Due to the difference in altitudes in the country's regions, the amount of precipitation, day and night temperature, air movement activity can vary considerably.

If in the Ararat valley only 200 millimeters of precipitation fall in annual terms, then in the mountains this value can reach 800 millimeters. The average temperature during the year is about 5 degrees above zero. For winter, northern and western winds are characteristic, in the summer the southern and eastern winds predominate. During the whole year there is a significant solar activity and, in general, low clouds.

Despite the rather severe weather in the mountainous regions, the climate in Armenia is rather favorable. Visiting the country at any time of the year has its advantages, and it can be confidently asserted that the weather will not spoil the impression of the trip.
