Scandinavian mythology: Thor is the god of thunder

One of the main characters, sung by Scandinavian mythology, is Thor. A powerful red-haired god, able to overcome any opponent, enjoys love even today. However, the image of a goblin in films and comics can not be considered canonical. On the question of how he was according to the ideas of the ancient Scandinavians, only mythology can answer. Thor - the god of thunder and lightning, the winner of giants and the patron of the peasants - is today at the center of our attention.

Gromovnik

According to the texts of the Elder and Younger Edda, Thor was the son of Odin. As his mother is most often called Erd, goddess of the earth, but in some sources the thunderer is called the son of Frigga. Thor since the childhood was distinguished by huge force and uneasy character. Like a sudden summer thunderstorm with a hurricane of wind and thunderclaps, a young God periodically was covered with fits of rage. The mother, who was unable to curb the child, sent him to foster parents. Only when he reached the age of majority, Thor, who had already mastered self-control, was able to return to Asgard and take his place in the temple of the court.

Undefeated defender

As described by the German-Scandinavian mythology, Thor was a mighty warrior with red hair and a beard. He defended the Asses from monsters and giants. In this case, the thunderer was like the last. Huge and heavy he never rode. No horse could bear God. Prior to the goal, Thor made his way on foot or on a chariot laden with iron. Son Odin had a great appetite and at one time could eat a whole bull. His chariot was ridden through the sky by two goats, Tagniostr and Tangrisnir (grinding and gritting his teeth). If Thor wanted to eat on the way, he roasted both, and then, blessing his bones with his hammer, brought them back to life.

Most of the time, Thor spent in the fight against the giants-etunami. However, in order to call the rumor to help, the gods in Asgard needed only to pronounce his name and the god of thunder would fight, he appeared.

He protected Thor and the people. It was believed that he guarded the houses and fields of grain-growers from giants and other misfortunes. Thor favored the lower classes. In his house there were even 40 rooms where the souls of the dead slaves felt no worse than the soldiers in Valhalla.

Ammunition

Mjöllnir, hammer of the Torah, mythology calls him the main weapon. He represented the personification of lightning and therefore constantly was red-hot. Mjollnir always returned to the master, reminding this property of a boomerang. Thor used the hammer not only for combat purposes. The magic weapon was able to resurrect animals, with its help blessed marriages. The hammer also affected fertility. To keep a red-hot weapon in bare hands is not easy - Thor always wore iron gloves.

Another indispensable attribute of the god of thunder and lightning was the magical belt of Megingerd, capable of doubling the power. Thor, the Scandinavian mythology repeatedly points to this, in such outfitting became virtually invincible. Giants constantly tried to take the hammer from the thunderer or to lure him to him unarmed.

Eternal companion

On trips, Odin's son often accompanied Loki. Thor, mythology is full of such episodes, often defeated giants thanks to the cunning of the god of fire. One example of this is related to the abduction of Mjöllnir by giants. The hammer was stolen by Trim. The giant agreed to return the magic weapon if he was given to the wife of the goddess Freyu. Loki came up with a cunning plan, how to circle a villain around his finger. He persuaded Tor to wear Freyja's dress and go to Trim. The giant did not suspect the dirty trick and gave the hammer to the god of thunder and lightning, after which he was defeated.

A family

As the mythology indicates, Thor had two wives. The giantess Jarnsaksa gave him the sons of Magni and Modi (strength and courage). From the goddess Sif Tor had a son Luridi and daughter Trud. According to other sources, the mother of Modi was also Sif. Together with his brother Magni, he had to survive the Torah and other gods and become the ruler of the Ragnaroka's restored world.

With the goddess Sif and the children, the lord lived in Bilshirnir's chambers, which were located in Asgard. The house of the Torah consisted of 540 rooms.

As mythology tells, Thor will perish along with other gods on the day of the end of the world. The thunderbolt will smite with the hammer of the serpent Ermungand, the son of Loki, but he himself will perish, drowning in the poison, spewing out of the monster's mouth.

Characters similar to the Scandinavian red-bearded giant winner, there are almost all cultures. This is Indian Indra, and Slavic Perun, and Greek Zeus, and Roman Jupiter. They are united not only by the connection with thunder, thunder and lightning, but also by the struggle with the forces of evil, constantly striving to subjugate the world of gods and people. The image of the defender, endowed with power, beauty and intelligence, is attractive at all times. It is not surprising, therefore, that the image of the Torah is actively used in modern media culture, simultaneously attracting new characteristics, which, according to the man of this century, perfectly fit the protagonist.
