Router Asus RT-N10P: setup

An excellent entry-level router with superior functionality and impeccable reliability is the Asus RT-N10P. The configuration of its software component, as well as the correctness of the wired connection will be discussed in detail in the framework of this short article.

Specifications

Expect an impressive set of wired and wireless ways to transfer data from an entry-level network device is not necessary. Here there is only the most necessary for building a small computer network of entry level for a home or a small office. The wire part of the network must consist of four devices. Just exactly how many LAN ports there are on the back of the router. All of them are painted yellow. There is another exactly the same port, but it's already blue. The abbreviation WAN is placed next to it. It connects the incoming twisted pair from the provider. There is no additional USB socket in this device. Therefore, you can not connect a network printer to it. For the same reason, you can not connect to it 3G-modem and provide a duplicate connection to the Internet. Only one antenna is responsible for the wireless part of the network. The maximum data transfer rate here is 150 Mbps, while the wired part of the network boasts only 100 Mbps. Finally, it should be noted that the router supports only three versions of the "Wai-Fay" technology: b, g and n.

Equipment

A typical bundle of this model of the router - like any entry-level device. Its boxed version includes such components:

  • Sam router with one antenna.
  • The power supply unit with a 12 V output and a current signal of 0.5 A.
  • 1 meter of compressed twisted pair (it, like the case of the router, is black).
  • Warranty card.
  • Advertising booklet with a list of all service centers.
  • User's manual (it describes in detail the configuration of the Asus RT-N10P router).
  • CD with software and electronic version of the documentation for the network device.

Device Description

The indicator panel is displayed on the front panel of the router. It consists of 8 LEDs:

  • The first one shows the presence of food. It is turned off when there is no voltage on the device, flashes during its loading and lights up continuously during operation.
  • The second indicator, with the logo "Wai-Fai", characterizes the operation of the wireless transmitter. During the exchange of information it flashes continuously, and when it is in the standby mode, it is on continuously.
  • Next to the third LED is the inscription WPS. It starts flashing only after starting new devices using this technology.
  • The fourth indicator characterizes the exchange of information with the Internet. It flashes continuously during the transfer of information. If it goes out, it means that there is no connection to the provider's equipment and you need to check the input cable.
  • The last four indicators are tied to four wired LAN ports. In the same way as the previous LED, they flash during the transfer of information and turn off when there is no connection.

On the back of the router are:

  • A place to install the antenna.
  • Buttons Reset, Power and WPS.
  • One input port and four LAN ports to create a wired segment of the computer network (for example, to connect an IPTV set-top box).

In advance we learn the parameters

Before you begin configuring the router, you need to know exactly the connection parameters to the provider's equipment. This information is usually indicated in the contract for the provision of data services. It can also be found on the official website of the telecommunications operator and by telephone to support users. Then find out the parameters that need to be made in the Asus RT-N10P. Setting up a Rostelecom-connection, for example, requires the following values:

  • The connection type in this case is PPPoE.
  • The login and password are also specified (they must be different from those used to connect to the network and specified in the contract).

All other parameters remain unchanged in the Asus RT-N10P. The setting of the "Beeline" connection is provided by the following parameters:

  • The connection type in this situation is L2TP.
  • The IP address is obtained automatically, in the same way as the DNS server address.
  • Also specify, as in the previous case, login and password.

Connect the configuration router

First, you need to build a temporary scheme for specifying the Asus RT-N10P parameters. The adjustment can be performed on a permanent circuit, but not always physically feasible. Therefore, it is recommended to configure this device in 2 stages. The first of these is a temporary connection and setting of all parameters, and the second is the transfer of the router to a permanent location and the collection of a fixed scheme of the computer network. The procedure for collecting the temporary scheme is as follows:

  • We have a PC and a router nearby.
  • We connect them with a twisted pair, which was bundled with the network device.
  • The power supply of the router is installed in the nearest socket (if it is not there, then we use the transfer), and the plug on the end of its wire is on the advisory port on the back side of the network device.

First start-up and software configuration

Then the configuration of the Asus RT-N10P router requires setting the program parameters, which needed to be found out in advance. But the order of entering the values in this case is the following:

  • Turn on the router and personal computer. We wait until the end of each download.
  • Then run any of the installed Internet browsers on the PC. In his address line we enter four three-digit numbers, which must be separated by a dot. The first one is 192, the second is 168. The last two values are exactly the same - 001. This is the network address of the router. After that, you must confirm the entry. To do this, press the "Enter" key.
  • In response, you will be prompted, in two fields you will need to enter your login and password. If this is the first switch on the router, then in both fields type the same phrase: "admin". Then you need to point the pointer to the button labeled "Login" and make a single press of its left button. The task is slightly more complicated if you are not the first owner of this router. The login and password set on it can be different from the default ones. Therefore, it is recommended to reset its parameters to the factory settings. For this it is enough to hold down the button with the inscription "Reset" for 10 seconds.
  • Then the window with the title "Welcome" will open. In its left column there will be only three points. The first is to check whether the connection is correct. In this case, you can skip it. Then there will be an "Internet Setup". Here we go and set the parameters from the provider, which were cleared up earlier, that is, the type of connection, login, password and other data specified in the service agreement. The last item is "Router settings". Here you must specify the name of the wireless computer network, as well as the password to connect to it. Do not forget to set the encryption method. It is highly recommended to choose WPA2. It is he who guarantees the maximum degree of protection.
  • After making all the changes, do not forget to save them. To do this, you need to do a one-click on the button of the same name on the right side of the screen.

After that, you can turn off the computer and disassemble the entire temporary scheme.

Installation and connection on a permanent basis

Next, you need to install already on a permanent place Asus RT-N10P. The configuration of its software component is completely completed. You just need to put it on a permanent place, connect and verify the correctness of the network. The location of the router must meet four criteria:

  • Nearby there must be a 220 V socket to provide power to the device.
  • The wire from the provider should be easy to reach here.
  • The router should be as close as possible to the center of the room. This will ensure the best signal quality.
  • From the rest of the room it should not be fenced with metal sheets or structures. If this is not taken into account, then the coverage area will significantly decrease.

It is based on these conditions and choose the location of the router. After installing it, we connect a twisted pair from the provider to its blue port.

In the other four ports we install wires as needed from those devices that will be located in the wired segment of the computer network. Next we connect the power supply in the same way as in the case with the time circuit. Well, do not forget to install the antenna. Then we check the circuit again and apply voltage.

Test "Wai-Fay"

The next step is to test the Asus RT-N10P wireless network. WiFi setup on the router was performed earlier, but the smartphone or tablet is performed as follows:

  • Go to the settings and find the item called "Wireless Network". Turn on "Wai-Fay" and scan the available wireless connections.
  • Then in the list choose the name of our network (it was set at the previous stages) and connect to it.
  • Then you must enter the password for the connection.
  • Next, run any of the Internet browsers that are installed on your mobile device. In its address bar, enter any address and get the start page of this Internet portal.

Checking the wired LAN segment

It is much easier to test in the wired part of the network of the Asus RT-N10P router. The connection is configured automatically in this case. Then simply on the switched-on PC we start the installed Internet browser, enter the address and get the start page of this Internet portal.

Configuring IPTV

Such technology as IPTV is also implemented in the Asus RT-N10P. The IPTV connection is configured as follows:

  • Connects to one of four LAN ports using a twisted pair IPTV-set-top box.
  • Then, when the PC and the router are turned on, the user enters the settings of the latter using the previously described method.
  • After opening the configuration interface, select the menu item in the right column with the inscription: "Local Area Network". Then we move in the right field of the interface to the IPTV tab.
  • On it we set the connection parameters (port and address) and save the changes.
  • After that, you can turn on the console and start watching channels.

Let's sum up the results

An excellent entry-level router for small home and office networks is the Asus RT-N10P. Setting it up is fairly simple and is done in a matter of minutes. And this is another plus of this device.
