René Gilles' methodology: objectives and features of the conduct

Among the projective methods of personality research , a special place belongs to the technique of René Gilles, developed in 1959, which can be used for the psychological study of children aged 4 to 12 years.

René Gilles's methodology includes 25 images on which children and adults or only children are housed, as well as 17 test tasks. All these tasks are aimed at identifying the features of the child's behavior in actual life situations for him, as well as the situations in which his attitude towards those around him is affected. Each picture is accompanied by a short text, which describes some of the circumstances, as well as asking the child a question.

René Gilles' method allows psychologists to describe the system of personality relationships of the subject, which consists of two groups. The first includes indicators that characterize the attitude of the child to people (mom, dad, both parents, brothers and sisters, grandparents, friend or girlfriend, teacher or educator). Indicators of the second group characterize such personal characteristics of the child as curiosity, the adequacy of behavior, the desire for leadership in the group, the desire for solitude and the desire to stay in large groups.

It is important that testing is conducted in individual form. Before he starts, the psychologist should explain to the child that they are waiting for answers to questions about the tests and pictures.

From the subject it is required that he choose for himself a place among the people pictured in the picture. Or he identified himself with a character who occupies a certain position in the group. In the textual part of the methodology, the child needs to choose the behavior that is typical for him from the above options.

Due to the simplicity and schematics, which is characterized by René Gilles' technique, it is the easiest for the child. And also gives an opportunity to present the results of this survey not only qualitatively, but also quantitatively.

René Gill's methodology, compared to other projective methods, has a huge advantage, as it represents a transitional version between projective tests and a questionnaire. It can be used as a tool for in-depth study of the personality. In addition, it is excellent for research that requires statistical processing and measurement.
