Recommendations on how to increase the speed of the Internet

Despite the fact that many modern providers provide their subscribers with access to the global network at speeds of tens of megabits, for some users the question of how to improve the speed of the Internet is still relevant. In fact, only at first glance it may seem that the speed problems are in the past - it's enough even to skim through thematic forums to understand the urgency of the issue. A vivid example is mobile devices with their wireless modems, in which each "extra" kilobyte is in the account.

So, how to increase the speed of the Internet? There are several ways to solve the problem, so consider the main ones in order of increasing complexity. The simplest option from which, in fact, the Internet speed setting begins is the replacement of the modem driver or the network card (depending on the method of connection to the provider) on a newer version. The driver should be downloaded from the developer's site of the network device. For example, if you access the Internet through a wireless modem, you need to visit the developer's site in the support section (usually called it), select the model you want, download the driver and install it. The same is for network cards.

If you carefully study the issue, you can see the pattern: most often trying to figure out how to increase the speed of the Internet, users of older versions of operating systems. If, for example, in Windows 7, all other things being equal, the Internet speed does not fall below a certain value, then everything is completely different in Windows XP. The reasons are obvious: as a rule, in new versions work with data packets is improved and network stacks are refined. It is also possible to assign the correction of the found shortcomings, indirectly affecting the speed. Recommendation one: conservatism is not a place in the field of developing computer technology, so sometimes you can increase the speed of the Internet by simply changing the version of the operating system. A cardinal solution is to completely change it and go, for example, from Windows to Linux.

Very often the need to learn how to increase the speed of the Internet is dictated by suboptimal settings. By default, the automatic updating mechanism is enabled on Windows , which should be disabled or switched to manual mode to improve the network connection: in the Start menu select "Control Panel", then open "Update Center" and "Options". If there is no way to decide how to increase the speed of the Internet, then we can give a general recommendation: all network actions of programs should be carried out under the control of the user. No auto-updates, all operations are only in manual mode, with a confirmation request.

Sometimes the speed is reduced due to the work of a malicious program-virus that has got on the computer and takes some of the traffic for its purposes. Conclusion: the protection system should be effective enough to prevent "infection". The virus on the computer is a common cause of speed loss.

The next step is to optimize the connection. As you know, the basic settings of the Windows network are designed for fairly high-speed connections. This can be corrected by tweaking programs (Optimizer) according to their needs. An example is Ashampoo Win Optimizer and BoostSpeed from Auslogics. In these software products you need to specify the type of connection used (wireless, satellite, etc.), apply and restart the computer. The changes made by the programs should help solve the speed problems.

The list of similar applications can be supplemented with cFosSpeed, the opinions on the effectiveness of which are divided, therefore the work needs to be checked individually. In its settings there are options for adjusting MTU and the priority of the parameter "ping / throughput", favorably affecting the speed.

In addition to software, do not ignore the hardware side of the issue, so to improve the connection of the wireless Internet to the modem you need to connect an external antenna, for ADSL - replace the old cable, for satellite - to adjust the positioning, etc.
