Rapport - what is it? Designation and rules of knitting

Those who learned to knit independently, hardly know many terms that are directly related to this type of needlework. Of course, you can create knitted masterpieces and without understanding the special designations, but for this, most likely, you need to have a special talent. But those needlewomen who want to take advantage of the help of magazines and pages on the Internet in order to link a model, know the terms and symbols simply necessary. Otherwise, nothing will come of it. In this article we will talk about such a concept as rapport. What it is, you will understand when you read the article to the end.

What does "rapport" mean in knitting with knitting needles?

If you are knitting a product with an ordinary knit, such as a face or hosiery, then you will not encounter the notion of "rapport". But when knitting some kind of pattern, knowing what it is is useful to you.

Simply put, rapport is the number of loops that need to be repeated throughout the entire width of the product, or the number of rows that also require repetition. To be clearer, let's explain with a simple example. Let's say you knit an elastic band. Everyone knows that it is knit through the alternation of facial and purl loops. So, the rapport in knitting with knitting needles will correspond to the number of front and back loops: when performing a rubber band 2 x 2 - these are two facial and two purl. Total four loops, which we will repeat across the entire width of the gum. Agree that everything is quite simple.

Rapport and its designation in complex patterns

If you decide to tie a blouse with a beautiful openwork pattern, then for sure in the description you will find such words: "repeat rapport ...". Orienting the scheme, you can see the designation of the rapport square brackets or arrows. If you prefer a verbal description of the pattern being executed, then the repeating loops (rapport) will be marked with an asterisk. Almost always the series starts with several loops that do not require subsequent repetition, then follows rapport (requiring repetition across the entire width of the article), then the final loops. Do not forget that the number of loops you have typed for knitting the product must be a multiple of the number of loops in the rapport. Only in this case the pattern will be uniform.

Each pattern has its own rapport. What is it, you now know. It happens that rapport includes a very large number of loops and does not repeat. In this case, it is necessary to calculate the loops before and after the rapport so that the pattern is in the center.

Vertical and horizontal rapport. What it is?

There are two types of this concept. This is a rapport of a horizontal and vertical character. We have already considered the horizontal variant above. Recall that this is a repeated number of loops to create a uniform pattern throughout the canvas.

But the vertical version provides for the repetition of a certain number of rows. Let's say you knit a pattern with a heart, as in the photo. The approximate height of this pattern is 15 rows. By using these 15 rows, you will get a heart, but the height of the product is much larger, so these series will have to be repeated more than once. These 15 rows, as a result of which the heart is loosened, and there is a vertical rapport. If the purl strings are knitted inlaid or according to a drawing, they are not indicated in the diagram. Do not forget about it.

Crochet

Rapport in crochet - this, in principle, is the same as when knitting with knitting needles. It is displayed in the same way on the diagram (with the help of square brackets). Its feature can only be the designation of series. If in the scheme for a pattern made with spokes, often even rows are not indicated, since they have the same method of execution (in the wrong way or according to a drawing), then when you crochet on the diagram all rows are seen, both even and odd. Therefore, before you start work, carefully study the scheme and note for yourself the most important points. For example, if you crochet not in a circle, but from the right to the left, and then from left to right, then at the beginning of the row you need to perform air loops in order to raise the height of the row. And here they are, just in rapport and do not enter, they do not need to be repeated.

Useful tips for beginners

Careful consideration of the scheme guarantees you an ideal result. If you are a beginner needlewoman, then for the first works it is better to choose the most simple pattern and simple rapport. What it is and what it is for is much easier to understand in practice than simply studying theory. Therefore, boldly take a hook or knitting needles in your hands and start knitting. Do not be afraid to do something wrong. After all, as they say: "He who does nothing does not make mistakes!" Of course, it's unlikely that errors will be avoided at all, but you will gain invaluable experience. And this is very useful to you in further work.

We hope that from all of the above, you have received an answer to the question you are interested in and the concept of "rapport" now does not seem so frightening and incomprehensible to you. Inspiration for you and pleasant work in all respects!
