Port forwarding, port forwarding, opening ports - these concepts, found in computer literature, are to some extent synonymous. In general, this means opening access from the outside (usually from the Internet) to the software installed on the user's computer. Behind the router, firewall, antivirus, the computer does not receive connection requests from the network. They are blocked by the above programs as potentially dangerous.

At the same time, there are a number of programs for which you need access from the network. The most obvious example is a web server. In order for him to connect, he must have an eightieth port (http) open. And if you read the instructions with the antivirus or firewall, you will figure out what you need to press to correctly configure the port forwarding, then the situation with the routers is different. Some routers on the first start will simply close everything (including access to the network), others do not have a Russian interface, and in the third it's just hard to understand the beginner. Nevertheless, port forwarding on the router is quite a simple situation, and having opened one, other necessary ones are opened by analogy. Below we will find out how to open the port in several models of routers presented in today's market, but now we will analyze the general case.

Why open?

Configuring port forwarding generally looks like this:

• Some program from the network, trying to connect to the user's computer, encounters a closed port.
• The user learns that you need to open the port for this program to work.
• It goes to the web interface of the router, and if it knows how, it opens the port.
• The next time you try to connect, the program gets the answer, and the mutual communication between the computers is configured.

In addition to the above web server, the DC network can serve as an illustration of such a connection.

For connection, the computer receives a request from the network, in contrast to conventional surfing, when the pages are opened on request from the user.

Asus users

So, what will the port forwarding look like for the users of the routers of this company? Asus calls this function, like most brands, port forwarding. For example, we will analyze the model RT-N66U. The redirect settings are on the corresponding page, which, in turn, is hidden in the "Internet" block.

Go to the page. There is information about what can be configured, warning about 80 and 21 ports, and the settings themselves. In the middle block, turn on the function, as in the picture above, and go to the list at the bottom of the window. Here we fill (from left to right): the name of the service (this is for your convenience); Range of ports (you can specify one); Local address (IP of the machine to which you want to skip requests); Local port (you can not configure it to avoid confusion); Protocol (if not sure, put, as in the picture).

After filling all the fields, add a new rule (the Add / Delete button) to the right of the filled line. All, now the router will skip requests to the specified port from the external network.

Zyxel

Keenetic's port forwarding from Zyxel looks much the same, only the web interface of this router is more compact, and the choice of different settings is on the left in the main menu.

All submenus are hidden in the main menu, and only blocks are displayed on the page.

From the main menu, go to the "Home network" section, then - to "Servers". Next we turn on Port Forwarding as in the picture, and at the bottom we enter our data: "Service" - "Other", then the number or range of ports, "IP address" - enter the address of the machine for which we set the gate, "Description "- we fill in for ourselves, and in the field" Access "- the same as in the picture. Just below the right click "Add".

New Zyxel models

The transmission of Zyxel Keenetic ports of the first generation, regardless of the model, is configured the same way, it is depicted above. For newer generations, this window will look a little different. Enter the web interface, click on the shield icon, and in the window that appears, select "Add rule".

In the opened window we need to enter the interface, it can be viewed in other windows (usually PPPoE) settings. We enter the port, protocol and IP in the appropriate fields (underlined), then click on "Save".

Port forwarding Zyxel Keenetic Giga, Giga II and expected III will repeat the schemes already described, so we will not go into detail on this, but we will proceed to the settings of the following devices, namely D-Link routers.

D-Link Dir-100, -300, -615, -620

We will not write down the settings for each of these devices, they are identical, so we confine ourselves to one model. The main visual difference between these models is the lack of USB, so if there is a D-Link without USB of another model, there should not be any special difficulties. Port forwarding Dir-615 is configured in several steps. In the upper menu, go to the Advanced section, then the Virtual Server in the left menu, in some models the desired window can be hidden under the Port Forwarding button. Settings must be made for each protocol separately, therefore, these routers have double rules.

To open each port, we need to fill in two boxes. The first one is from left to right: Name - the name of the connection (for you), select Application name, then the port number. Traffic Type - set to choose (but in the other rule choose the remaining one), in the last column - Always.

The lower graph refers to the actual port, we put it from left to right: Name - we put the IP of the computer for which we are making the adjustment. The next field is Computer name. The port is the same as above. Traffic Type is skipped, and in the last field enter Allow All - we allow you to connect to this port on the internal machine on the Internet.

The next rule is similar, we change only the Traffic Type field. The second rule opens the same port for connection, but by another protocol. Other ports are opened in the same way, filling in for each two rules.

D-Link NRU - routers with USB port

D-Link NRU ports are also ported on the basis of virtual servers, but due to the additional functionality of the web interface, they look different.

The "Virtual servers" section is located in the "Firewall" block. Click "add" and fill in the new window: "Template" - you can leave Custom, the interface, usually Wan, the protocol - you can already choose both. External, internal port - put the same four times, so as not to be confused, and the internal IP - write the number of the machine on the internal network. When you need to open a range of ports, they are written as the start and end port. Then the range is repeated twice - the initial range of ports and the final range of ports. Then click the "Change" button. The window closes, and in the previous one a new rule appears.

A bit about fixing

If you have not done this before, now is the time to enable IP fixing for the stable operation of the "port forwarding" function. D-Link, like the other brands discussed in the article, allows you to not record addresses, but redirection is attributed to a specific permanent address, so fixing is necessary.

In addition to the function described in the article, fixing can slightly speed up the internal network, but how to configure it, it is better to look in the instructions specifically to your device. Typically, this requires only a couple of clicks in the window dedicated to the settings of the home network, assigning addresses to computers and devices that will subsequently go online with a router.
