Population of Tomsk: number

Located on the picturesque Tomy coast, the city of Tomsk is in many respects a unique phenomenon. Settled in the distant 1604 by the Cossacks of the notorious Yermak Timofeevich, he for many decades was an ordinary provincial city, where officials who were preparing for resignation were exiled. However, the construction of the first university in this part of Russia dramatically changed the picture. In a short time the city became not only the student capital of Russia, but also one of its scientific centers.

The basic demographic characteristics of Tomsk

The population of Tomsk, whose number for the last ten years, although not very rapidly, but increasing, is a rather variegated picture. According to the latest statistics, about 586 thousand people live in the city at the beginning of this year. Compared to 2010, this figure has increased by about forty thousand, but to say that there are no demographic problems in Tomsk, naturally, it is impossible.

First, in the Soviet period, the growth rate of the urban population was so high that there were plans to turn one of the centers of Siberia into a city with a million population. However, due to a significant change in the social and economic situation throughout the country as a whole, these plans have so far had to be forgotten.

Secondly, the population of Tomsk grows exclusively due to migration. The city remains very attractive for young people from many other Siberian regions, and the developed industry attracts good earnings of immigrants from the republics of the former USSR. At the same time, there are very serious problems with fertility in Tomsk itself.

Sex and age structure of the population

The population of the city of Tomsk, its sex and age structure is quite typical for a modern, medium-sized city. However, there are a number of peculiarities that stem from the fact that Tomsk is currently, first of all, a city of students and scientists.

According to the latest statistics, women in the city are slightly more than men, 53% versus 47%. However, this preponderance is mainly due to the high mortality rate of men aged 30-40 years. On the other hand, in most other cities of Russia (especially large cities), this imbalance is even more noticeable. Apparently, the fact that Tomsk is an attractive place for young people makes itself felt.

The population of Tomsk is relatively young. The average age is slightly lower than the average for Russia (36 years against 38). At the same time, the townspeople belonging to the category of "able-bodied population", the overwhelming majority (almost 66%). Juveniles and pensioners approximately equally - about 17%. Such figures indicate that the city administration was able to create in the village the necessary conditions for attracting young cadres.

National composition

The population of Tomsk, as, indeed, many other Siberian cities, is very homogeneous in its national composition. Almost 90% of registered residents here refer themselves to the Russian ethnos. This fact is not at all surprising if we recall that the city was founded and subsequently developed mainly by the efforts of Russian colonialists from Central Russia.

To the second largest ethnic group can be attributed immigrants from Central Asia. The overwhelming majority of them are Uzbeks and Kirghiz, who have long been accustomed to unfamiliar climatic conditions and play an important role in such areas as retail and housing and communal services.

Among other nationalities, it is possible to single out Tatar, Ukrainian and German diasporas, as well as representatives of the Belarusian and Chuvash peoples. The appearance here of the ancestors of these people was associated with the policy of the Soviet leadership, which through the mandatory distribution system tried to create such national agglomerations in each region of the RSFSR.

Population of Tomsk: division according to confessional identity

Based on the national structure of the city, we can assume that the overwhelming majority of Tomsk citizens are Orthodox, and this is indeed so. The first temple - the Trinity Church - was built by the Cossack founders, and then before the October Revolution, another 31 Orthodox temple buildings were erected here. Great attention was paid to the head of the local diocese of missionary activity, the baptism of local pagan tribes.

In addition to the Orthodox in Tomsk, there are other faiths. So, even before the revolution, there was a large enough Lutheran church here, which was rebuilt in 2006. In addition, the Muslim and Jewish communities, as well as the Old Believers, are active. All these religious organizations coexist peacefully, there are no serious conflicts between them.

Measures of social support for Tomsk citizens

Continuing even in a not very favorable period, the growth of the population of Tomsk is largely related to the policy pursued by the leadership of the city and the region. Social support for the population of Tomsk includes the following specific activities:

  1. Payments to veterans of war and labor, workers in the rear, laureates of Lenin and state prizes, pregnant women and nursing mothers, as well as some other categories. These payments are of a regular nature.
  2. Compensatory payments to certain groups of the population on payment for services of organizations related to the housing and communal services sector.
  3. Additional payments to families in which the second and subsequent child was born.
  4. Help the most gifted students and young scientists.

Thanks to all these measures of support, the population of the city of Tomsk shows a good dynamics of its development. True, it is worth noting that the most attractive city looks in the eyes of young people, who value the level of local education. But more mature people tend to leave from here to find a job corresponding to their high qualifications.

Main problems and prospects of development

Tomsk, unlike many other Siberian cities, in terms of demography looks very confident. To the question "How much is the population of Tomsk?" The local government almost always starts to give statistical calculations, which indicate a positive dynamics of this indicator. At the same time, and here there are regular problems.

Firstly, the population of Tomsk, whose number is almost 100% determined by migration, is in a rather difficult situation. Tomsk is a "tasty place" for young people, students and scientists. However, the city's leadership should pay more attention to retaining these staff after graduation.

Secondly, the very unfavorable ecological situation around Tomsk does not contribute to the attractiveness of the city. If earlier this factor was hardly taken into account, now it plays a very important role for those wishing to connect their destiny with this region.

Finally, thirdly, the fate of Tomsk in many aspects is connected with the fate of the whole of Siberia, and this is already a question for the federal leadership of the country.
