Petrovsky Park (Kronstadt). Sights of Kronstadt

Not far from the northern capital is the city, which was included in 1990 as a UNESCO World Heritage Site - Kronstadt. It is located in the Gulf of Finland, on the island of Kotlin. And one of its main attractions is Petrovsky Park. Kronstadt is the birthplace of illustrious persons. There is an amazing historical atmosphere. The article will deal with the monuments of this city, among which the Petrovsky Park is worthy of special attention.

Kronstadt

On the territory of this settlement lives about fifty thousand people. The history of Kronstadt begins in 1703, when Peter I laid the first stone on the island of Kotlin. The emperor's goal was to create a city that would enclose all the port facilities and serve as an outpost of the state's defense.

Kronstadt remembers a lot of outstanding historical events. In 1905, an uprising broke out here with the participation of over three thousand heated sailors. In 1921, the so-called Kronstadt rebellion took place, as a result of which Tukhachevsky's troops fired the city during the day. And three months after the start of the Great Patriotic War, the Luftwaffe raid took place.

For a long time the city was closed. And only in 1996 the excursion to Kronstadt became available both for Russians and for foreigners.

sights

What can you see in the famous city? An excursion to Kronstadt usually involves visiting museums, among which the most attracted tourists are the Kronstadt Maritime Museum. There are three churches on the territory that are of considerable historical interest. And certainly, it is worth to visit the Summer Garden, Hospital Garden, Catherine Square and Petrovsky Park.

Kronstadt is a city that you can reach for a long time only on the water. But in 1983 a ring road was built. Not so long ago - a tunnel under the Gulf of Finland.

Routes

Today it is not difficult to get to the island from St. Petersburg. And not only on your own car, but also on public transport. From the metro station "Staraya derevnya" there is a bus number 11. The road will take no more than fifty minutes. And already being in this wonderful city, you can reach one of the buses to the stop "Petrovsky Park".

Kronstadt is a unique city, rich in sights. But to begin his examination is from this historical monument, created in the nineteenth century by the project of a man, about which one should also say a few words.

F.F. Bellingshausen

In history, this man is known as the discoverer of Antarctica. FF Bellingshausen graduated from the Marine Cadet Corps, located in the territory of Kronsadt. Six years after his admission to this military school, he was already promoted to midshipman. Then Bellingshausen circumnavigated the world, and in 1819 headed the Antarctic expedition. This man made a significant contribution to the study of the southern polar territories. He was buried at the Lutheran cemetery in Kronstadt. However, the grave of Bellingshausen, unfortunately, is lost. In 1970, a Russian navigator was erected a monument.

Petrovsky Park

In 1839 Bellingshausen was appointed governor. This active man was dissatisfied with the state of the central streets of Kronstadt. He decided to start improving the city, but found no support from the Emperor. And the indefatigable perfectionist decided to invest his own money in the transformation of the city.

Admiral (by the time Bellingshausen already had this title) hired workers and ordered them to dig through the drainage canals. Then proceeded to gardening the central streets. At the same time he chose seedlings. What is growing in the Petrovsky park in Kronstadt today? The main tree of the fortified city is the oak tree. He, as you know, is a symbol of fortitude and greatness. The oaks are harmoniously combined with local historical monuments and save tourists from the summer heat.

Park in the Dutch style

In the middle of the nineteenth century a small garden was landscaped. But Bellingshausen did not think this was enough. He decided to split the park in place of this garden, as well as the nearby streets. And since the governor had a lot of life experience behind his back and had seen many things during his travels, he decided to create something original. Something that was not in Russia before. He decided to create a park in the Dutch style. And in the very center of it erect a monument to Peter the Great. Bellingshausen only had to implement this grandiose plan, which he safely entrusted to one of the famous engineers at that time.

The monument to the first Russian emperor was sculpted by Peter von Klodt. The hand of this master owns a lot of sights that can be seen visiting the Northern capital. Among the works of Klodt are monuments to Krylov, Nicholas I, Vladimir of Kiev. Although it is worth saying that a sculpture that can be seen in the center of Petrovsky Park, only cast was a Russian artist with a foreign surname. The model of the monument was acquired by the French master Theodore Jacques.

On engravings of the nineteenth century one can see a giant sculpture towering above the young trees. Today Petrovsky Park looks different. Trees grew over a century and a half. The bronze emperor is not yet buried in the majestic oaks, but some of the trees have outgrown him for a long time.

The Bolsheviks changed the name of the park in 1917. He became one of the symbols of the revolution. That is why it was named the park of Freedom. The former name of this landmark was returned in 1991.

Winter pier

What else is remarkable about the Petrovsky Park? It includes the winter pier - a pretty picturesque place, where at any time, not counting the dank winter days, many tourists. Here you can see the guns that once belonged to the ship "Emperor Paul I".
