The Moscow Museum of Modern Art is the first state museum in the history of Russia, specializing in the art of the 19th and 20th centuries. The opening of this significant facility for the state took place 16 years ago. Since then, the museum has managed to achieve the status of one of the most significant art centers of the capital, in which exhibitions and thematic events are constantly held.

The Moscow Museum of Modern Art (MMOMA) has repeatedly expanded its profile since its foundation, thanks to which it has appreciated the grateful public. Thanks to the support of the NCCA (State Center for Contemporary Arts), within the scope of the institution's activities, an international youth contest of young talents was held, held twice a year.

Moscow Museum of Modern Art: address and concept

The opening of the institution took place in 1999 thanks to the assistance of the Moscow Department of Culture. The idea of implementing the project belongs to the President of the Russian Academy of Arts Zurab Tsereteli. Possessing an impressive personal collection of art works written in the XX century, the founder began replenishing the museum's funds from his own stocks. Subsequently, the paintings significantly increased, and to date, to the pride of compatriots, we can say that the famous Moscow Museum of modern art has become one of not only the most important exhibition centers of the country, but also widely known in foreign bohemian circles.

According to the executive director Vasily Tsereteli, their contemporary art museum in Moscow is very sensitive to the biennale held in its walls (international exhibitions of paintings for the purpose of their presentation), since such events give a chance for novice and talented artists to express themselves and communicate with the masters World-wide. This is very valuable, since the application for participation has the opportunity to submit to everyone who wishes, which gives internationality to the world of art, opens new horizons in the artistic field.

The location of the museum, as well as it is necessary to such a significant object, is the city center. The museum uses 4 buildings for its exhibition grounds. The main complex is located at the address: Petrovka 25. In its depths there is a permanent exposition, and sometimes temporary exhibitions are held. For the landmark: this is Gubin's former mansion. In addition, the Moscow Museum of Modern Art has additional exhibition spaces, the addresses of which are: Ermolaevsky Lane 17, Tverskoy Boulevard 9, Gogol Boulevard 10.

The core of the museum's collection

Since we are talking about the Museum of Modern Art, it is logical to assume that the vast majority of the main collection belongs to the brush of avant-garde artists. Among the works that formed the basis of the central exposition of the exhibition center were the creations of Picasso, Salvador Dali, as well as the work of leading artists of the Russian school of painting of the XX century.

Most of the works included in the museum's collection were purchased at art auctions in Europe and the United States of America. It is known that MMOMA returned to home many paintings of Russian avant-garde, previously exported abroad. The artistic core of the museum consists of paintings by Malevich, Marc Chagall, Mikhail Larionov and Natalia Goncharova, Pavel Filonov, Vasily Kandinsky, Aristarkh Lentulov, Alexandra Exter. In addition to painting, there are sculptures in MMOMA, the most valuable of which belong to the hand of Alexander Arkhipenko and Osip Tsadkin. Also pride of the exhibition are the works of primitivists, among which there are paintings by Niko Pirosmani.

History of the main museum building

As was previously written, the bulk of the art exhibition MMOMA is on Petrovka, in the house of the richest merchant, industrialist Mikhail Gubin. The building was designed according to the sketches of the Russian architect Kazakov Matvey Fedorovich (famous during the reign of Catherine the Great). It is his merit belongs to the restructuring of the central part of the capital in the traditions of the Palladian architecture.

By the end of the 18th century the house was the main building of Gubin's urban estate, and later its assets were handed over to the gymnasium. Ironically, within the walls of the educational institution, artists such as the poet Bryusov, as well as the creator of the private literary and theater museum, Alexei Bakhrushin and his brother studied.

The revolution of 1917 did not spare the mansion, and its fate changed radically. The need to obtain a noble education has disappeared, and the walls of the building have been converted to the Institute of Physiotherapy and Orthopedics. Until 1999, until the time when the Moscow Museum of Modern Art was established, there was a hospital in the house.
