Moscow Cathedral Mosque (Prospect of Peace): the history of construction and location

In 2011 it was finally clear that the Cathedral Mosque (Prospect of Peace) had become unusable: part of the building erected in 1904 collapsed because of numerous cracks. However, in September 2015 the reconstructed and rebuilt church again opened its doors.

Construction and opening

Traditionally, during the major Muslim holidays, crowds of believers can be seen on the Ring line of the metro and near the Prospect Mira station. Even those who do not know exactly where the main mosque of Moscow is located can easily determine this by these signs.

The fact is that in the Russian capital there are only 4 temples for Muslims, and next to the sports complex "Olympic" is the largest of them. From 2011 to 2015, the mosque was unavailable due to major reconstruction and expansion of the old building, which became more than a century of emergency use.

According to experts, the construction cost about 200 thousand US dollars. The main source of funding is Dagestan businessman Suleiman Kerimov, who became the main sponsor and was awarded a nameplate on the building wall. Also contributed by the Turkish government and another Russian millionaire Mikhail Gutseriev. And this money was spent wisely: the building consists of 6 levels, its total area has increased approximately 20 times, for men and women there are separate entrances, ramps and elevators for the low-mobile segments of the population are also equipped. In addition, it is planned that there will be guided tours, for single tourists, the doors of the church are always open.

The opening of the rebuilt building took place on September 23, 2015. Besides the representatives of the clergy, the ceremony was attended by Vladimir Putin, Nursultan Nazarbayev, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, as well as the heads of some Russian republics.

In its design, the Moscow Cathedral Mosque (Prospect of Peace) combined Muslim traditions and certain features of Russian architecture. For example, the minarets resemble the Kremlin tower.

Data

The Moscow Cathedral Mosque (Peace Prospect) was the only active Muslim temple in Moscow during the Soviet era.

Before the 1980 Olympics, it was decided to demolish the building, but ambassadors of Arab countries and Russian religious figures rose to protect him.

It is the largest in Europe and one of the two highest in Russia (along with being built in Ufa). The capacity is about 10 thousand people.

A significant part of the things for interior decoration donated by the Turkish government. In particular, front doors, chandeliers, and prayer mats were delivered from abroad.

Since October 2015, the mosque (Peace Prospectus) is the site of the Prophet Muhammad's hair, attracting thousands of believers to the temple.

Location:

The new building stands in the same place where the old mosque was located on Prospekt Mira. Address: Vypukov lane, house 7. At the same address is located and the Council of Muftis of Russia.
