Long-term memory and how it helps to take exams

Everyone has passed exams at least once in his life. Many and several times: at school, at admission to college or university, and during studies. And on how long-term memory is developed in us, success in training and passing all sorts of examinations and tests largely depends.

Psychologists treat the concept of memory as a mental process responsible for the accumulation, storage and reproduction of knowledge, skills and abilities. This human activity is characterized by many features, including the division into the following types: short-term, operational and long-term memory. When a person needs to remember any information, in the first place, short-term answers for it. Its volume can be different. It depends on many factors: age, life experience, abilities, kind of thinking, which is used to memorize a certain amount of information.

For everything that is postponed during training and preparation for exams, a short-term memory initially answers . It is a kind of filter that filters out much unnecessary and translates useful information into long-term memory. It is like an archive in which all the necessary knowledge for the student or student is laid out on the shelves. What should be in the long-term storehouse, gets there by volitional efforts. That's why you have to re-read the material many times in preparation for the exam, or something to memorize by heart.

There are many exercises and ways to make the memorization process more efficient. Scientists for the most part agree that long-term memory keeps information from short-term memory after a certain time. That's why there is no sense in learning tickets before the exam itself, it's better to distribute the preparation time for several weeks or months - so the knowledge will be strong and conscious.

The main processes of memory are memorization (in our case, arbitrary), preservation (which is best ensured by repetition of the material), reproduction (recalling the contents of tickets before the examination in consultations) and recognition (in the case of meaningful memorization, the connections that survived during memorization work). These processes are interrelated and more effective when the student is attuned to a meaningful perception of the educational material.

So, how can long-term memory help you pass the exams successfully? All the knowledge given by teachers during the semester or the study quarter should be remembered consciously. You can at the same time resort to the help of any associations, periodically repeat what has been done, and perform additional tasks on the topic.

To ensure that memory does not fail in the exam, it is necessary to distribute time and learn tickets according to a pre-planned plan. Given the schedule of exams and the time for their preparation, it is necessary to distribute the amount of memorized material evenly, leaving time for breaks and rest. You do not need to memorize a ticket by heart, you should read the material carefully enough (better out loud), draw up an approximate short answer plan and try to answer the question on this plan. Repeat the ticket material in an hour, and then - the next day. To consolidate the learned, it is recommended to return to this ticket about a week later. It is advisable to pronounce the answer aloud, so not only the visual, but also the motor, and auditory memory are involved. The more ways to memorize will be involved, the better the result.

It is good to use charts, tables, drawings, and composed independently (that is, meaningful personally). The images that were prepared before the eyes, the memory will helpfully present in the exam, and these pictures and diagrams will be much easier to reproduce the educational material.

The main thing - do not bring the body to stress, memorizing tickets in recent days, forgetting about full nutrition, rest and a healthy sleep. This does not lead to a positive result.
