Leo Tolstoy "The Sevastopol Stories" (first part) wrote a month after the siege in 1854. This is an imaginary city tour. "Sevastopol Stories": a summary of 1 part about the events in December 1854

In December in Sevastopol in 1854 there was no snow, but it was frosty. In the city the usual military morning began. At the approach to the pier, the air was filled with smells of manure, coal, dampness and meat. People were crowding at the pier: soldiers, sailors, merchants, women. Steamers and skiffs, filled with people, constantly moored and sailed away.

At the thought that he was in Sevastopol, the soul filled with pride and courage, and the blood began to flow faster through the veins. Although the spectacle, representing a mixture of a beautiful city and a military dirty bivouac or military camp, was terrible.

In the Sevastopol hospital, which is located in the large hall of the Assembly, the wounded are talking. One sailor does not remember the pain, although he lost his leg. Another patient lies on the floor, from under the blanket the bandaged remainder of the hand is peeking out. It gives off a stifling unpleasant smell. Next to it lay a sailor-woman without a foot, she brought her husband a lunch on the bastion and came under fire. The wounded were bandaged right in the operating room, they watched with amazement amputations, hearing the cries and groans of the patients. There is suffering, blood and death all around.

The most dangerous place is the fourth bastion. The officer, walking quietly from the embrasure to the embrasure, says that after the bombing, only one gun remained in action on his battery, and only eight people, but the next morning he already fired again from all his guns. From the embrasure you can see the fortifications of the enemy - they are close. In the sailors serving the gun, in the width of their shoulders, in each muscle, each of their firm and unhurried movement, the components of the Russian force are visible - simplicity and stubbornness. Anyone who saw this, would understand that you can not take Sevastopol.

"Sevastopol Stories": a brief summary of the second part about the events in May 1855

For half a year the war for Sevastopol. Many human ambitions were offended, thousands were satisfied, but thousands were calmed down, embroiled in death. You can doubt the presence of the mind of the belligerent, because the war is illogical - this is crazy.

Among the strolling infantry captain Mikhailov, who, in addition to rewards and money, wants to enter the circle of the military "aristocracy." He was formed by the adjutant Kalugin, Prince Galtsin, Lieutenant-Colonel Neferdov and captain Praskukhin. They are arrogant in relation to Mikhailov.

The next morning Mikhailov went instead of the officer, that he fell ill, on the thirteenth time to the bastion. A bomb exploded near him, Praskukhin was killed. There, Kalugin also went to the headquarters. Wanting to inspect the fortifications, he asks the captain to show them. But the captain fights on the bastion for six months without a break, and not from time to time, like Kalugin. The period of vanity and risk has already passed, he has already received awards and understands that his luck is coming to an end. Therefore, he entrusts the adjutant to the young lieutenant, with whom they are uselessly competing in risk, they think that they are bolder than the captain.

"Sevastopol Stories": a summary of part 3 of the events in August 1855

Mikhail Kozeltzov, an officer who was respected in the army, returned to the besieged Sevastopol after his wound. A lot of people have accumulated at the station. Horses at all are not enough. Among those waiting, Michael meets his brother Vladimir, in the position of ensign going to the active forces.

Volodya was seconded to the battery located on the ship. The ensign can not sleep for a long time; dark apprehensions interfere with him.

The elder Kozeltsov, having arrived to the new commander, gets his old company. Earlier they were comrades, but now between them is a wall of subordination. In the company everyone is happy with the return of Kozeltsov, he is respected by both soldiers and officers.

Volodya gets acquainted with artillery officers. Especially friendly with him Junker Vlang. They are both sent to a very dangerous battery on Malakhov Hill. All of Volodya's theoretical knowledge turns out to be useless on the battery. Two soldiers are wounded, there is no one to repair the guns. The Junker is so scared that he thinks only of staying alive. The soldiers of his team are hiding in the dugout of Volodya.

Since the morning the guns are already in order. Volodya is very glad that he is not afraid, but, on the contrary, can perform his duties well, he loses his sense of danger.

The assault of the French takes unawares the elder Kozeltsov. He jumps out with his little sword forward, inspiring the soldiers. After receiving a fatal wound in the chest, he asks whether the French were beaten or not. Out of pity they tell him that yes, they have been beaten. He dies, thinking of his brother and rejoicing that he has fulfilled his duty.

Volodya commands easily and cheerfully his battery, but the French still bypass and kill him. On the mound is the French flag. Vlang, together with the battery, steams the ship to a safe place. He bitterly regrets the death of Volodya.

Soldiers, leaving the city, say that the French do not stay long in it. Every retreating person looks at the left Sevastopol with pain and bitterness, accumulating in the soul hatred towards the enemy.

In compositional and emotional terms - a complex work "Sevastopol Stories". The summary can not convey all its plot lines and artistic value.
