Knives with their own hands: stages of forging, features in hardening

Any self-respecting hunter in his arsenal has hunting knives, with his own hands he once made them. You can, of course, go to a specialized store and buy there, but when you do something yourself, you put your soul into it. Take the "piece of iron" and grind on the stone - it's not serious.

In order to make knives by hand, it is necessary to have a pair of hammers, different in weight, ticks with a long handle, an anvil and a horn. As experienced blacksmiths say, such a craft should be started with forging ... horseshoes. To fill your hand. Special literature to read does not make sense, since it is written by professionals and for professionals, which we are not.

Armature is ideal for our horseshoes, which is easy to find in a landfill or anywhere else. And besides, it is great for studying the color of metal during forging thanks to its jagged edges. The main task is to learn how to forge the iron exactly, precisely, without resorting to the help of a file and a file. After passing such training, you can go, in fact, to the main thing - to make knives with your own hands.

The process of forging is laborious and involves many stages, during which something new comes along that fascinates and interests. That is why forging is an art. Knives with their own hands should be made of strong steel, and the best way to do this is steel grade 65G. Where can I find it? There is nowhere to go, this steel is used in the springs of trucks. And from one spring you can make several knives, on which experiments will be made during hardening.

Now you can proceed to direct forging. You have already decided on the extreme color at which you can forge (reinforcement horseshoes), but it is worth remembering that the steel of this brand is cracked at insufficient temperature, and therefore it is better to warm it up more often. Thus we process about 15 cm of spring and form it into a rectangle. After this, it follows from the rectangle to forge the plate perpendicular to the spring. Its thickness should be a little more than the thickness of the future knife, and a length of 15 cm - chopped chisel. In our case, we get about 10 pieces of blanks for future blades.

So, we change the big hammer to a small one, take the workpiece with ticks, reheat it and proceed to forming the contour of the blade. By the way, throwing knives with their own hands can be made from unsuccessful options, since they are smaller in form and thickness of metal. The form can be chosen different, but for the beginning it is better to take as a model a classical finku.

After this it is necessary to form the blade itself, for this purpose the blade is heated and with light hammer blows it is brought to the trapezoidal shape. After this, it is necessary to create a file or another way with a file without final sharpening.

Homemade knives with their own hands as well as in the factory production must be hardened. This is an important stage and, therefore, it should be prepared thoroughly. To determine the desired temperature, it is required to heat each blade, while lowering the degree and throwing them into the water. Then, breaking them by the grain at the break, we determine the blade and the temperature with which it was heated. Hardening of the blade is performed under the same conditions, but oil acts as a coolant.

The release is carried out by heating it to create a yellowish color on the cleaned areas and is immersed in the oil too.

So we get a blade, well, already the handle is a master thing, there are no limits to the imagination and everyone can do something for themselves.
