IZH 59 "Sputnik": characteristics and photos

Recently, among the fans of hunting rifles, interest in ordinary non-collection domestic models, made in the sixties and seventies, has increased. One of the most popular representatives of this product is the IZh 59 "Sputnik" gun.

History of weapons

IZH 59 "Sputnik" was manufactured under the leadership of the chief designer A. Klimov from 1959 to 1962. During this period, over twenty thousand units were collected. This gun has gained wide popularity among hunters and received the title of "people's". This is due to the fact that IZH 59 "Sputnik" is the first open-ended double-barreled hunting rifle equipped with smooth trunks placed vertically on top of each other.

Many gunsmiths know such a thing as "bokflint". It is used to designate different hunting rifles with a similar vertical placement of trunks. IZ 59 "Sputnik" opened a whole line of "verticals" created by Soviet gunsmiths. As a result of their design work, such very popular boom flanks as IZh 12, 27, 25 and 39 were presented to the attention of consumers. When creating these models, the base of the main shotgun IZH 59 Sputnik was used.

What is the product?

This model is a double-barrel shotgun hunting weapon containing vertical folding trunks. They are attached using two couplings. In the design of this model gunsmiths do not provide the presence of interconnect bars. In the production of channels and chambers, the chromium plating procedure is applied. To attach the detachable fore-end, a special latch is used. Extraction of fired shells from two barrels is carried out with the help of special ejectors. They are located in the coupling in special lateral grooves.

Targeting is carried out using a special sighting bar. It is soldered to the upper trunk of the gun IZH 59 "Sputnik". The characteristics that received this weapon, indicate a 50 percent accuracy of its lower trunk. The sturdiness, which is provided during shooting by its upper trunk, is not less than 60%. To lock the gun used a wide wedge. He clings to a special spring-loaded hinged hook, which contains a state muff of the trunks.

A beech or walnut tree is used to make the bed. On the form of a box there are direct or pistol.

The back plate has a plastic or rubber shock absorber. Covering the lateral surfaces of the trunks is carried out with the help of special wooden linings. As evidenced by numerous reviews of owners, sports hunting and sports shooting - these are areas for which IZH 59 Sputnik ideally suits. The photo below represents the features of the exterior design of this hunting weapon.

How are the barrels arranged?

The official part of the barrel unit is located in the barrel, in which a special cut-out is provided for this purpose. They are also equipped with two windows for the front and rear barrels. From the inside of the wall of the barrel are equipped with inclined grooves for the pusher. There are two openings on the shields of the pads under the strikers. The shank is the end of the back of the stem. On the shank are the sear and the fuse system.

  • The weapon is equipped with smooth-bore barrels.
  • The number of barrels for one gun is 2 pieces.
  • The trunks are arranged in a vertical plane.
  • In the manufacture of gun barrels, the wizards use the standard drilling: the hem is the bottom trunk, the full choke is the upper trunk.
  • Combat food is not automatic.
  • The length of the trunk is 75 cm.
  • Weight - 3,5 kg.
  • The weapon is designed to use ammunition twelfth caliber.
  • The size of the cartridge is 12/70.

The device of the shock-trigger mechanism

The USM of these guns is placed in the pads. For the mechanism, separate bases are also provided, which are also called "larvae". USM is equipped with cylindrical spiral combat springs, as well as return kurks, which are located separately from the striker. With the help of hinges and levers-builders, a cocked cocking of IZh 59 "Sputnik" is carried out. The owners' testimonies indicate that the shock-trigger mechanism of this gun is not complicated. If necessary, it is not difficult to disassemble and assemble. To perform these works, it is not necessary to use special tools.

How do you deal with weapons?

In order to disassemble the gun, it is necessary to perform the following actions:

  • Disconnect the forearm.
  • Turn the locking lever all the way to the right side.

The gun can be considered disassembled if it has a barrel unit separated from the receiver and the box.

Types of USM

Shock-triggers in this model represent three different systems:

  • Design of two trigger hooks. Each of them is designed to work with any one of the two trunks.
  • A system of two trigger hooks. Each of them can consistently affect two trunks.
  • A design containing one trigger designed to work with two barrels. For this type of USM, any sequence of connecting the trigger with the trunks is characteristic. Its use is made possible by the use of a special switch. This mechanism is considered to be an invention of Russian gunsmiths, as it has been implemented constructively in Russia.

A characteristic feature for all three impact-trigger mechanisms is the ability to perform a smooth trigger release.

How is the fuse in the rifle IZH 59 "Sputnik" arranged?

The owners' feedback on the design of fuses in this hunting weapon is positive. With the help of an automatic fuse, the whispering is carried out during the cocking of the hammers. Thus, the closed whisper remains only when the cock is cocked. If it is lowered, the fuse button is idle: it does not lock its whispering flag. Its closure is due to the automatic fuse mode immediately after opening the trunks and cocking the trigger in IZ 59 "Sputnik". The responses of the owners of these guns indicate that the safety system successfully manages its task:

  • When the positions of the trunks are not closed, the probability of unplanned shooting is completely excluded.
  • Due to the special design of the fuses, the owner has the opportunity to produce an unstressed descent trigger, which is on the combat platoon. To do this, open all the trunks and move the safety button forward. Then press the trigger. Only after performing these actions, the trunks are closed.

Ammunition

To equip the cartridges for this rifle, both smoky and smokeless powder can be used. "Shirts" sleeves are made of paper or metal. The gun is designed to use ammunition only twelfth caliber.

Distinctive feature of the construction

In these guns there are no connecting strips. The connection between the trunks is carried out by two couplings. In order to eliminate the excessive stress that arises during shooting, the developers of this gun in the muzzle for the lower trunk are provided with a sliding fit. As a result, according to many owners, any changes in the powder charge lead to a change in the angle of bullet departure. Consequently, the use of reinforced charges is not desirable for firing from the IZ 59 "Sputnik". The owners' testimonies testify that during shooting with reinforced ammunition, the gun barrels vibrate significantly, as a result of which the weapon starts to "baptize": a bullet fired from the upper trunk lies below its goal, and from the lower one, on the contrary, higher. According to the owners of this gun, the distance between the trunks is very large: if you take this weapon in hand by the trunks and squeeze - they will come into contact with each other.

This feature, typical for IZH 59 "Sputnik" was taken into account by the developers in the process of creating new hunting and sports models of rifles. As a result of improvements, it was decided to solder the trunks among themselves. In the future, a similar decision was used to create the IZH 12. According to the owners, IZH 59 "Sputnik" was created in the years when hunting ethic of shooting was respected: any increase in the powder charge or strong rolling of cartridges was unacceptable. According to the experts of hunting weapons, it was for the skillful shooters, and not for those who liked to shoot with ammunition reinforced by 50 grams, that the IZh 59 Sputnik gun was created with ammunition.

Foreign analog of the Soviet bokflinta

Merkel is one of the expensive and very sophisticated models of verticals, which gained wide popularity in Germany. This gun for whole generations of German hunters has become a fetish, and the possession of this weapon was a matter of special pride.

High prikladistost, excellent balancing and ease in controlling the gun made this German bokflint one of the most sought-after sports and hunting models in the arms markets in Germany. Exactly the same popularity among connoisseurs of smooth-bore rifles in the Soviet Union is used by IZH 59 Sputnik. The analogue of the Russian model consists of three parts: a receiver, a block of trunks and forearm. According to the owners of the German Merkeli, attaching the forearm to the trunks in these rifles is strong enough. The guns are equipped with very strong locking parts.

Strengths and weaknesses of German and Russian bockflint

Judging by the numerous positive feedback from the owners of verticals, the advantages of rifles with vertically placed trunks are:

  • Improved review during shooting.
  • High "survivability" of guns.
  • Comfort in operation (models with vertical placement of barrels are convenient for grasping).
  • The absence of a connecting bar between the barrels ensures the ease of weight of the gun. Due to this, it has increased maneuverability and is easy to manage.
  • Features of the design of the fuse allow the owner of this gun to perform shockless descents of hammers mounted on the combat platoon.

The disadvantages of IZH 59 "Sputnik", like most of the bockflint, include:

  • In different trunks, the hammers hit the capsules with different strengths. According to some owners, frequent misfires are characteristic for the lower trunks.
  • Intensive use can lead to loosening of the buttstocks. The owners of these rifles note that the attachments are "tufted" along the notch in the upper and lower parts. Due to the fact that over time, the tightening screw on the butt is weakened. Also loosening can be caused by a weak insertion of metal into the wood. Owners recommend these tightening screws periodically check and tighten.

Conclusion

The appearance of such an original and practical product, as IZH 59 Sputnik, was a coup in hunting and sports shooting. Today, new smoothbore rifles are produced with trunks placed in the horizontal plane. In the creation of modern bokflintov designers take into account and correct all the shortcomings of previous models.
