How to deal with such a disease, as the vertex rot of tomatoes

There are two types of such a common disease as vertex rot of tomatoes. In the first case, the fetus is affected in the area of the peduncle as a result of a disturbance in the plant metabolism, the second cause of this unpleasant phenomenon are bacteria. Let us consider in more detail how to avoid this disease and what to do if the fruits are still affected.

Prevention of vertebral rot of non-bacterial origin

The causes of the disease in this case are mainly a lack of calcium. Externally, it is manifested in the appearance in the peduncle of a watery stain, which then begins to expand, turn black and become covered with characteristic folded dry circles. The vertex rot of tomatoes (the photo of affected fruits for visualization is presented on the left) of this type is most likely to occur when the soil under them is not sufficiently moistened and it lacks such an important trace element as calcium. Most often this type of disease affects tomatoes growing in greenhouses. In this case, along with the lack of irrigation, the cause is often too high air temperature (27 - 30 degrees).

The affected fruits are absolutely unsuitable for food, as well as their seeds for planting. Vertex rot of tomatoes is unlikely to occur if the optimal temperature regime (22-25 degrees during the day and 18 at night) is observed in the greenhouse. In addition, you should know how to properly water the plants. On cloudy days, the soil under the tomatoes is moistened once a week, in sunny - 5 times.

Of course, the change in the temperature regime in the greenhouse is a rather complicated task. Therefore, special attention should be paid to the composition of the soil. In the fall on soils that are poor in calcium, liming must be carried out. A similar procedure will be useful for tomatoes grown in the open ground. In addition, plants should be sprayed with 0.5 solution of calcium nitrate. Do this during intensive ripening of the fruit with a frequency of about two times a week.

Seed treatment in special solutions will also help prevent the appearance of such a disease as vertex rot of tomatoes. In this case, the following composition can be used: 0.3 g zinc sulphate, 0.5 g manganese sulfate, 50 g copper sulphate. All this is dissolved in a liter of water and soaked in a mixture of planting material for 24 hours.

Refusal to grow varieties developed for open ground in a greenhouse can also reduce the risk of the appearance of such a disease as vertex rot of tomatoes. How to deal with it - the question in this case will not be so acute. It is advisable to use such, for example, varieties like "Rusich", "Volgograd", "prelude", etc.

Prevention of the appearance of bacterial vertex rot

Stains on the fruit in the pedicel when the disease is due to the bacteria are grayish in color and are of the type that are damp. In this case, the flesh of the fetus is also affected. The main cause of such trouble is considered high humidity and high temperature. Do not water tomatoes too often in cloudy weather. If it is a question of a greenhouse, it is necessary to try to achieve that humidity of air inside was not more than 70% and not less than 50%. In addition, it is necessary to cut off the affected fruit and burn the leaves in the fall. The fact that the pathogenic bacteria perfectly winter in it, and then settle on new plants. Of great importance is also such an event as the garter of fruits. Tomatoes lying on the ground are more likely to be affected. Planting material should be treated with 1% solution of potassium permanganate

Thus, observing all the necessary rules of cultivation and taking various preventive measures, it is possible to prevent the development of such a disease as vertebral rot of tomatoes.
