Today, any person should have computer skills and have at least a minimum set of programs. To the standard and most popular can be attributed Microsoft Word. Working in Word, users are faced with the need to highlight certain ranges of text for clarity. Very often a list should be inserted in the document. The program allows you to create any documents, letters and projects, using a wide range of options for formatting text. To learn all the functions of Microsoft Word, you need to spend time, but the result is worth it.

Lists are necessary in order to make the text understandable and expressive. A numbered and bulleted list of the same level is used in most documents. In theses and scientific works a multilevel list is used.

Numbering and markers

First of all, it is necessary to select the paragraphs that should be formatted as a list. This can be done with the mouse or simply place the cursor at the beginning of the line from which the list will begin.

In MS Word, there is a "Home" tab in which you can select the required insertion in the "Paragraph" group. The user presses the "Numbering" or "Markers" buttons, then indents them using the ruler. This method is very simple and understandable, but an inexperienced user can face hidden difficulties. By inserting the bulleted and numbered lists repeatedly, the indents need to be edited anew.

In the event that you want to format each list individually and change the font parameters, not every program user can make the text correct, in addition, it will take a lot of time and effort.

Lists with numbering

Each element of the list is highlighted with a number, the numbering is automatically adjusted. To create and edit lists, there is a "Numbering" button in the "Paragraph" group. You can also use the "Numbering" function of the context menu of the selected paragraph.

List options:

  • The format of the number determines which character will be next to each element.
  • The numbering style can be chosen depending on the particular document: Arabic or Roman numerals, uppercase or lowercase letters, and so on.
  • The "Initial value" field allows you to select the digit from which the list will begin.
  • In the event that you need to create a similar list, but renumber it again, it is convenient to use the function "Start a new list". It is necessary to select the elements and set all the parameters.

You can automatically insert a numbered list. To do this, you must perform the following actions:

  • At the beginning of the paragraph, before entering the text, you need to put "1.", then "Space" or Tab. The paragraph will be formed as the first item on the list.
  • By inserting a "1" before the paragraph, and then pressing "Space" or Tab, the user will create another type of list.
  • By analogy, lists with letters are made out. In the lines you need to enter Latin letters with a dot or bracket. After each paragraph, press "Space" or Tab.

Creating a bulleted list in automatic mode

Insert the bulleted list in the "Word" can be as follows:

  • At the beginning of the paragraph, you must enter an asterisk or a "more" sign, and then press "Space" or Tab.
  • Automatically create a bulleted list. You can enable it by going to the "File" tab and selecting the "Parameters" group. In the Spelling tab, select AutoCorrect settings. In the "AutoFormat" section, you need to check the boxes next to the styles.

You can create a bulleted list of the following types:

  • Symbol. In the "Symbol" box, you can select any character that will act as a marker.
  • Drawing. The "Drawing Marker" dialog box offers a large selection of drawn markers for creating an original list.
  • Font. With this function, you can change the font parameters of the selected marker.

Multi-level list

Marked and numbered lists are elements of a multilevel list. They should be set up as the user needs in a particular case. The structure can be edited using the function "Define a multilevel list". To check how all lists are displayed, it is convenient in the group "Lists in documents". To change the font parameters of each individually, a multi-level list is associated with the paragraph styles.

Key settings for the multilevel list

Configuring the list, which consists of several levels, you need to pay attention to the following parameters:

  • Select a level and an example of its design.
  • Defining the font settings, if necessary, you can specify a constant part of the number.
  • Select the type of numbering: symbol, pattern, letters and other options.
  • Determine the level at which numbering is updated.
  • Determining the indentation and layout of the text.
  • Additional editing options.
  • Match paragraph style and multi-level list.

Settings that were created once, in automatic mode, can be applied to subsequent lists. But if there is a need for editing, you will have to work with each list separately. This inconvenience may seem insignificant, but if there are a lot of lists in the text, it will take a lot of time to format it.

How do I change the marker style?

By clicking on the "Markers" button, you can select the one that fits in this case. To do this, go to the "Library" area and click on it. Similarly, the type of numbering is selected: in the "Numbering Library" area.

To turn a numbered or bulleted list into Word into text, simply press the corresponding button.

Each element of the text can be allocated with a special marker. To format the list according to the requirements of a particular document, select the "Define New Token" command.
