Engels, the museum of local lore: the mode of work, photos and reviews

On the left bank of the Volga there is a small but very cozy and green town - Engels (until 1931 - Pokrovsk). It is the second largest population in the Saratov region. The city has a long and interesting history, a lot of interesting places and places to visit. But it is better to get acquainted with the city from the local history museum, which contains interesting exhibits, photos, documents telling about the history and development of Engels.

History of the museum

The Museum of Local Lore (Engels) was founded in July 1925, after the official decision to create a republican museum of the Germans of the Volga region. The first director of the museum, the talented and well-known linguistic scientist, professor of the Saratov University, ethnographer G. G. Dinges, initiated the establishment of this institution.

Already in the first years of the museum's existence, a collection of clothes, household items of the German population of the republic, invaluable manuscripts related to the history of foreign colonies, documents on archeology and ethnography was collected. The staff of the museum conducted an active scientific research activity.

In August 1941, as is known, the Republic of Germans in the Volga region was liquidated, and the museum was closed. The exhibits were transferred to various organizations for storage and, unfortunately, many of them were irretrievably lost. The museum was rebuilt after the war, but it received a different status - the museum of local lore. Engels gradually recovered after the war, and the museum was replenished with new exhibits.

In 1960, the museum was headed by Evdokia Alexandrovna Bozhenko, who in the course of her work took a course to create a museum that would be based on local history work. But to fully engage in classical museum work and the construction of an institution of a historical type, which he was in the 1920s. Last century, it was possible only in the early 90's. XX century.

At this time the museum in the next, already the seventh, was transferred to a new spacious and bright building in the center of the city (Engels). The Local Lore Museum under the leadership of the new director S. I. Spiridonova entered a new period of its development. Today it is one of the most popular and visited cultural institutions of the city.
