Ear mites in a cat: treatment and prevention

Sometimes the owners of the cat begin to notice that she often shakes her ears and scratches them. In this case, the animal must be examined carefully. The fact is that this can be a sign of a disease such as ear mites. In a cat, the treatment of this infection is a process that is not particularly complicated, but not in neglected cases.

The main signs of otodectosis

When examining an animal combing its ears, most likely, dark small balls will be seen, sometimes even completely clogging the auditory canal. Their presence is one of the main signs of the presence of a special kind of parasite-a tick feeding on exfoliated cells of the epidermis. This is a small insect (about 0.7 mm long), cleaning the dead cells, damaging and living, which leads to the formation of a crust and a dark plaque. In very serious cases, damage to the tympanic membrane can occur, as a result of which ear mites in a cat, whose treatment at an early stage does not cause difficulties, penetrate from the outer ear into the middle, and then into the inner ear.

Sometimes it happens that the shell of the brain is affected. In this case, it will be much more difficult to correct the situation. Usually the animal at this stage of otodectosis simply dies. Therefore, immediately after any signs of infection are seen, the cat should be referred to the veterinarian or at least treated independently.

What drugs can help?

As already mentioned, the disease is quite dangerous - ear mites in a cat. It is recommended to start treatment immediately after the problem is detected. In order to save the animal from this unpleasant misfortune, it is necessary to take the following measures:

• Wipe the ears with hydrogen peroxide and rinse them, carefully removing the dark coating and balls.
• To drip into the outer ear special drops. For this, a variety of drugs can be used. It can be a medicament "Acaricide" warmed to 35 degrees (0.2-0.3 ml per each ear), "Bars" or "Amitrazine" (3 drops daily for a week). You can apply the agent "Stronghold" (5 drops). It is non-toxic, while it does a remarkable job of coping with such a plague, like an ear mite in cats. Drops "Stronghold", among other things, protect the animal from infection during the following month. They can be used for kittens. Medications "Stronghold" and "Acaricide" are used once. Only in very serious cases it is sometimes necessary to repeat the treatment.
• Support the immune system of the animal. This will help a balanced diet. In addition, the cat must necessarily give vitamins (for example, "Gamavit").

Applying all this set of measures, you can get rid of such trouble as ear mites in a cat. Treatment will not be effective if the premises are not disinfected. It is necessary to wash the floors, wash all the bedspreads and, of course, disinfect the cat litter.

Preventive measures

To avoid such a disease as ear mite in cats (photos of this parasite, as well as the infected animal are presented in the article), one should use once a month, for example, the drug Stronghold. Prophylaxis of otodectosis will be greatly facilitated by keeping the room clean. In addition, it is necessary to regularly treat the ears of an animal with special lotions. It is also necessary to periodically carry the cat to the veterinarian or independently examine it.
