Description Gerasim from the story "Mumu" IS. Turgenev. External and internal content of the character

Despite the simplicity of Turgenev's character, the description of Gerasim from the story "Mumu" should be at least two-dimensional: the characteristic is external and the characteristic is internal. Gerasim is a mysterious figure and gives the key to understanding the entire Russian national character.

Plot

An unusual Russian village peasant is taken from his native village and transported to Moscow (his singularity is that he is dumb). There, in the house of the local lady, he is trusted to be a janitor. Since Gerasim by nature to the limit is accurate and fulfilling, he does a good job.

Problems with Gerasim begin when he falls in love with the laundress (Tanya), working for Mrs.. All the servants and the mistress herself perfectly see what happens to the mute janitor, but the lady decides in her own way: she gives Tanya a wife for Kapiton, a shoemaker and a drunkard. This marriage is gradually coming to naught, but it's not about that now.

Gerasim on the wave of spiritual sorrow finds (rescues) the puppy. This is a girl (three weeks total). He cherishes it and cherishes it. The dog grows next to a wordless janitor and does not bother anyone until then, until he snaps at the lady. She orders the dog to be removed from the yard. When it does not work (Mumu returns to his master), then the dog is decided to be physically eliminated. After long mental trials, Gerasim himself assumes the role of executioner.

Turgenev's story ends with the fact that Gerasim returns to the village and lives there solitary without dogs and women. The plot is very important, since the description of Gerasim from the story "Mumu" somehow relies on a chain of events that occurred with a mute janitor.

Appearance of the main character

Gerasim is absolutely beautiful from the point of view of anthropometric data: it is high. It is 2 meters tall. He is strong, powerful. Wide in the shoulders.

As a real Russian peasant, he is a hard worker. Despite the seeming paradox, strength and efficiency are, rather, external characteristics of a person, rather than internal ones. Because they are visible to an outsider. Gerasim is fulfilling. And this is quality, both external and internal. It can be interpreted (perceived) and so, and so. Depending on whether the person internally receives what he is told to do or not. Such Gerasim (the protagonist "Mumu") appears before an external observer. Then there arises a natural question about what Gerasim is from within.

The inner world of Gerasim

It is terrible not that Gerasim does not say, but that he is still silent and inwardly. He does not have his own position in relation to the world. He was not like his whole life, so he was used to obeying. In addition, the realities of the 19th century do not have a crippling uprising. The paradox of Gerasim is that, for all his manly appearance, the exterior of the winner is a loser, for inside is completely empty. There is no content in it.

Of course, Turgenev gives the hero traditional Russian virtues: pity for people and animals, kindness, but, unfortunately, the beautiful sides of human nature feed from a fetid source - the lack of content. Gerasim is kind and sensitive only because he does not have the strength to be evil. And it would be nice, if not for the situation with the most native and close creature - Mumu. It (the situation) clearly showed how Gerasim is spineless. This is the description of Gerasim from the story "Mumu" (his inner qualities).

Riddle of Gerasim

Why Gerasim only after he lost everything, decided to do the same thing against the lady? The mute janitor took away all that he loved so much. Moreover, the ability to love was torn out of him, which is much more important and sadder. It is possible to argue, but it seems that when Gerasim returned to the village, he was no longer afraid of the fury of the lady, he did not care at all. What prevented him from taking the dog with him and running away? No one would look for him, and even if they had found, they would not have returned. What did he risk? People would have thought that he was an eccentric. Still would! Give up the place in the manor house for the sake of the dog.

Anyway, Gerasim did not do this. He had to lose the very basis of his life in order to give up the slave consciousness and find himself.

I.S. Turgenev brilliantly wrote the story "Mumu". The characterization of Gerasimus can perfectly determine not only him, but also every person. A person needs to lose something very important at first, in order to understand something priceless about himself. Thus, Turgenev's small story can generally be taken as a parable about a Russian person or a person in general. To whom as it is pleasant more.

This is the description of Gerasim from the story "Mumu". Every time, touching this little composition, the reader learns something important about himself. That's why classics and literature in general are valuable.
