Computer power supply and maintenance

Many believe that the main computer is the motherboard or processor. Such a statement is actually true, but one should not forget about other, equally important details, without which the main components would not work either.

One of them is a computer power supply. Without this device, the PC's work is simply not feasible. It is the basis in the system unit, and thanks to it, power is supplied to all other parts, from the motherboard to the cooling fans.

The standard power supply unit from the computer system unit is designed for a certain power and can supply all necessary devices with an electric current of various voltages. Therefore, it is based on a transformer, which divides the incoming voltage into the necessary components. In this case, the work of any transformer is associated with a side effect such as heating, which means that it needs to ensure uninterrupted cooling. It is for this purpose that special fans are installed that maintain the temperature and cool the computer power unit.

In fact, it is cooling that is the most vulnerable place of this device. When overheating begins to melt varnish on the windings of the transformer, which can lead to a closure and disable not only the computer power supply, but also other parts, powered from it. That's why many people prefer to purchase similar units equipped with several fans.

Another reason that this device can break down is dust. Since fans take air from the environment, a large amount accumulates over the entire period of their operation, and it can also lead to a closure and even hinder the operation of the fan itself. Therefore, it is recommended to do a half-year prophylaxis not only of the entire system, but also to clean the computer power unit from dust.

However, these are not all problems that can harm the operation of the device. The fact is that this device is practically not protected against network overloads, and the fuse-link (fuse) built into it can not provide complete safety. Therefore, any serious voltage drop in the network immediately affects the operation of the transformer, and it can affect the operation of other devices. In order to avoid such troubles, it is recommended to connect the system unit using a special rectifier or uninterruptible power supply.

The repair of computer power supplies usually consists of replacing a blown fuse or a damaged diode bridge. If the transformer is damaged, it will be cheaper to purchase a new unit than to repair the old device approximately for the same money.

Thus, the correct use and timely care for both the computer and the power supply will significantly increase the service life and save the user from unnecessary financial costs.
