Chronology of films about Strangers

Not so long ago, on the wide screens around the globe came the long-awaited blockbuster of the cult director Ridley Scott "Alien: The Covenant." Presumably, the story will be final in the popular franchise. The premiere of the painting is an excellent occasion to once again recall the chronology of films about Aliens. After all, this large-scale saga in its time completely changed the canons of science fiction.

How did it all start?

Let's start to consider the chronology of the films "Alien" from the very beginning. As often happens in cinematography, initially the project was foreshadowed not by the most successful outcome. In the 70's a novice screenwriter Dan O'Bannon - an ordinary graduate of the film school, wrote, it would seem, an unremarkable story called "Star creature". The pillar of the plot was the battle of space trailblazers with a vicious, repulsive alien. The young man decided to earn some money on the script and offered it to director Roger Corman, who had the reputation of an experienced producer of low-budget films. It's easy to guess that the "meter" considered the topic mediocre and rather worn out.

As a result, Dan O'Bannon trusted the producer and director Walter Hill. The latter was completely cold about the genre of science fiction, intending to turn history into an ordinary horror film.

Perhaps we would not have been able to consider the chronology of the films "Alien", if the script did not eventually migrate to Ridley Scott. The authoritative director managed not only to form the image of one of the most recognizable monsters in the cinema, but also to fill the series of adaptations with all sorts of philosophical and religious meanings.

The Stranger (1979)

So, let's start reviewing the chronology of the films about the Alien. As the author of the franchise Ridley Scott has repeatedly admitted, the first picture in the series was conceived in the form of an ordinary horror film like a mysterious hut in the forest or a house with ghosts. The picture did not pretend to be a serious science fiction creature. The tape was only intended to create an atmosphere of horrible horror, in which a group of people struggling to survive in complete isolation and despair.

In "Alien" the image of the maniac was replaced by a bloodthirsty alien monster, and the battlefield became the closed spaces of the spaceship "Nostromo". A traditional stage for that time was played on the screen. The group of space workers is engaged in transportation of minerals, dreaming to quickly get to their native planet in pursuit of premium. Of the general series, only an evil android is knocked out, hiding the true motives of his presence on board until the last.

The team of astronauts responds to an alien radio signal and then gets to know the very creature that was later christened xenomorph. It is this simple story that gives rise to one of the most protracted and spectacular epics in the field of science fiction.

"Strangers" (1986)

After the loud success of the first part of the space saga, James Cameron took over for the job, who succeeded Ridley Scott. With a fairly modest budget for the movie "Aliens", the author managed to present to the audience a sufficiently high-quality action film with elements of horror. The bulk of the funds went not only to create all kinds of models of armored vehicles and equipment, but also to design a new character - the Queen of Aliens.

The results of painstaking work were not long in coming. The film "Aliens" was awarded a number of prestigious awards. In particular, the picture was nominated for the Oscar and BAFTA awards for an outstanding visual component. To this, it is worth adding more than a dozen different nominations in certain categories, as well as simply rave reviews from critics and film fans.

"Stranger-3" (1992)

Let's continue our conversation about the development of the series. Considering films about strangers in chronological order, it is worth saying a few words about the third part of the franchise. For the development of the movie in the early 90's took the director David Fincher. The main role, as before, was invited to Sigourney Weaver.

Immediately it is worth noting that the director managed to turn the picture into the most serious and gloomy part of the epic. The real drama unfolded already on the introductory shots, when the author of the film decided to "kill" the girl Newt and corporal Hicks, who, in fact, became a new family for Ripley. As a result, the picture turned out to be a kind of reference to religious motives for self-sacrifice.

The film was received by fans of the franchise with bayonets and blown to shreds by film critics. Despite this, the director managed to fully convey the stylistics of the true horror and reflect the specific atmosphere that delighted the audience after the release of the first part of the story.

"Alien 4: Resurrection"

Finally, let's talk about the last (until recently) part of tetralogy. The French director Jean-Pierre Jeunet decided to take pictures of the tape. Due to financial constraints, as well as the author's original view on the development of history, the picture was met by the viewer most coldly. And this is not surprising.

Attention deserves the fact that the main character in the film is a clone Ripley, derived from a test tube. As a result, the tape script was filled with a lot of logical inconsistencies and a whole mass of rather strange turns.

Let's see, perhaps, the next part of the franchise "Alien: The Covenant" will bring something new to the series and give a good start to the restart of the space epic.
