In the sixties, the USSR badly needed machines with a payload capacity of eight to twenty tons on cheap diesel fuel. Automobile plants of that time could not fill this need. The government made a decision to build a new profile company. To build the plant, Naberezhnye Chelny was chosen in the Tatar SSR, because two navigable rivers, a good motorway and a railway pass through the city. The first car came off the main assembly line in mid-February 1976. It was a truck KAMAZ-5320.
A bit of history of the Kama Automobile Plant
The initial project of the Kama Automobile Plant was to produce 150,000 cars and 250,000 diesel engines a year. Machines were designed to play a significant role in the national economy of the country. The plant was designed not only by the leading organizations of the USSR, but also by experienced specialists from the US, FRG and France enterprises.
The first car was developed on the basis of two models of ZIL using a motor designed at the Yaroslavl engine plant. The carrying capacity of KamAZ-5320 was 8 tons. He worked for a long time in Bashkortostan, and now he is on a well-deserved rest in the factory museum of KamAZ. The enterprise developed rapidly. Three years later a hundred-thousandth truck came off the assembly line. This fact was unprecedented not only for the USSR, but also for the world industry.
Perestroika times
The nineties of the twentieth century were difficult for the enterprise, however, as for the entire industry. By the beginning of the 21st century, the management of KamAZ, with the support of the governments of Tatarstan and Russia, was able to turn the plant's debt (one million rubles) into shares, which allowed to restore production and to approach the break-even level of existence. Soon, the 1 600 000th car came off the assembly line. The capacity of KamAZ remained at the same level. In the first year of the coming century, the enterprise received a substantial profit - about sixty million rubles. Kama Automobile Plant became interesting for the largest players of the market, intensive integration with other companies began.

To date, the Kama Automobile Plant is the leader in the freight machinery industry in the Russian Federation and in the CIS countries, and also ranks thirteenth in the world in the list of leading manufacturers of heavy trucks.
