Calculation of heat transfer of the heating register

The heating system register is a device made of smooth-walled pipelines. By its design features, the register served as the basis for most radiators. Very often, these devices are located in the technical and industrial premises. In addition, cases when they are installed in apartments as part of autonomous heating systems are not uncommon. However, not everyone knows how to calculate the heat transfer of the register.

Main types and technical characteristics

There are several basic types of data for heating appliances. Registers are classified by the method of installation, form of execution and material. Therefore, before calculating the registers from smooth pipes for heating, we will examine in more detail each group of these devices.

According to the form of execution

  1. Sectional registers. Such heat exchangers are made from one or several smooth-walled pipelines with a diameter of 25 to 400 mm, connected by a branch pipe and closed by plugs. The heat carrier flows through the pipe into the upper section, and into the next section flows at the opposite end, and so on.
  2. Serpentine (S-shaped) devices - the pipelines are connected by arcs, resulting in a solid pipe. This shape allows to use the surface of the device as a whole, which increases the effective area of the heat exchanger. Below, we will consider how to calculate the heat transfer from a register of smooth pipes.

By the method of installation

Registers for heating systems are divided into portable and stationary. Portable or mobile devices are generally used in rooms where temporary support of a specified temperature is required prior to the installation of the main heating system. For example, when building a new building or when carrying out repairs in the garage. In such systems, antifreezes or synthetic oils are used as a coolant , and heat energy is generated by means of electric heaters.

By material

  1. Steel registers. This is the most popular type of instruments made of steel. It is also worth noting that steel is a fairly strong material. Excellent weldability and thus has good heat conductivity.
  2. Cast-iron devices. At present, the most popular are the registers of cast iron pipelines. But, despite the low cost, this material is rather fragile and unstable to mechanical damage. In addition, cast iron is poorly welded, which makes installation difficult.
  3. Aluminum registers. By popularity, these devices are slightly inferior to the registers of steel pipes. At the same time, they have a number of advantages: they look attractive, weigh little, give off heat well and are resistant to corrosion. The main and only drawback of aluminum registers is a high price.

Heat Transfer Calculation: Highlights

During the installation of the heating system, many people are interested in calculating the registers from smooth pipes. How to calculate that they were not too much (it will be very hot) or too little (it will be cool)?

  1. For a private house or apartment there is no need to calculate the exact figure, since in this case it does not matter the specific temperature value. It is important that the temperature regime is optimal.
  2. The simplest calculation: for 2 m 2 there should be one section (cast iron or aluminum), 1.5 m 2 - one section (bimetal).
  3. In case the ceiling is more than 3 meters, one section should be added. In the presence of a balcony, one or two sections are also added, depending on whether the balcony is insulated or not. A section is added if the room is corner.
  4. Since the flow temperature of the coolant is regulated by the municipal service, it is allowed for the apartments to calculate the heat transfer of the register irrespective of the climate.
  5. In private houses, this calculation is not suitable due to the fact that the system receives too hot water. This gives a strong overheating if the building is located in warm regions.
  6. In addition, calculation of the heat transfer of the heating register can be performed using online calculators. To do this, you need to enter some data, and then the program will calculate the required number of pipes.

Method of calculation

When choosing this device, it is important to choose the correct diameter of the pipelines from which the register will be made. The most optimal diameter is 32 mm, but registers of another diameter, but not more than 80 mm, are allowed. If the diameter is more than 80 mm, it may simply not suffice for the heating system to heat up such a device, since the boiler will not be able to supply the required volume of coolant.

In order to correctly choose this plumbing element and perform the calculation of heat transfer of the register, it is necessary to take into account the following factors:

  • The material from which the structure is made.
  • Wall thickness.
  • Number of window and door openings.

When calculating the heat transfer of the register, it is necessary to know the heat transfer value of one running meter of the pipeline. For example, one linear meter of a pipeline with a diameter of 60 mm can heat 1m 2 rooms with a height of no more than 3 meters.

In the table below, an approximate calculation of the heat transfer of the register is given, depending on the diameter of the pipelines.

Diameter of the pipe, mm. 25 32 40 57 76 89 110 133 167
Heated area, m 2 . 0.50 0.56 0.69 0.94 1.19 1.37 1.66 2.00 2.43

The table shows the data at a ceiling height of not more than 3 meters. In other words, in order to heat 60 m 2, 87 meters of a pipeline with a diameter of 40 mm or 44 meters with a diameter of 89 mm are required. After carrying out the calculations, it is necessary to make the drawings. Also, you will need to consider all the nuances of register placement in the room.

Installation of registers

When assembling registers, welding works are the most costly, which as a result will become the determining factor when choosing between a radiator and a register. However, you can do without them. Joints in this case are connected by means of threaded joints, which, even though they are somewhat inferior to joints on welding, can also last a fairly long time.

During installation of these devices, a small slope (0.05 ‰) should be observed in the direction of the coolant movement.

Conclusion

So, summing up, it is worth noting that registers are able to compete with other types of heating appliances. To choose the most optimal configuration of the device should be individual for each specific case, taking into account personal wishes and features of the premises. However, it is desirable to entrust the manufacture of heating registers, as well as their installation, to professionals.
