Volcanoes of Indonesia

The world's largest archipelago is located in the zone of tectonic faults, so there are so many volcanoes in the sleeping state. They become a powerful magnet for everyone who gets acquainted with the landscapes of the state, full of bright colors.

Volcanoes are among the main attractions of Indonesia, and walking tours on them are very popular. Many tourists who are going on a long journey dream of looking at the real underworld.

National Park in Java

In the east of the fifth largest island of the country is one of the most famous volcanoes in the world, attracting visitors with destructive beauty. One of the most powerful and destructive natural phenomena that can destroy whole cities, admires special greatness.

The island's national park Bromo-Tengger-Semeru is considered the most visited volcanic complex. It is a part of the mountain range, it is open at any time of the year, but it must be taken into account that during the wet season (November-March) due to precipitation, you can not get here.

Climatic conditions of the park are far from resort: the average daily temperature does not exceed 20 degrees, and at night it drops to zero.

The most popular volcano in Indonesia

It is here that the famous Bromo volcano is located, tourists from all over the world come to watch it. It is popular due to its easy accessibility and constant seismic activity. The top of the volcano is destroyed after another earthquake, and now the natural phenomenon with a disproportionately large diameter of the crater, equal to 600 meters, looks very strange.

Majestically towering above the terrain, the Bromo volcano, whose height is 2379 meters, is incredibly spectacular in the early morning and at sunset.

More than 25 thousand years ago there was a stratovolcano conical in this place, consisting of lava layers. After a strong earthquake, he lost his peak, which led to the formation of a sandy caldera (grooves in the vent). As a result of the destruction, an active volcano appeared, provoking a huge interest not only of tourists, but also of scientists.

Sacrifice to the Gods

At the foot of the giant live the Indians, who throw food, plants or even animals into the mouth of the sacred volcano to appease the gods. Since ancient times, the Bromo volcano, surrounded by legends, is a place where various rituals were performed. For example, the Yadnya Kasada festival lasts for about a month, during which it is customary to bring sacrificial gifts and pray to Hindu gods, begging for the blessing.

This ritual was born in the XV century in the east of the island of Java. The Bromo volcano has always been seismically dangerous, and only daredevils have descended to the vent during its activity.

A unique attraction - a meeting of the sunrise on Bromo

Tourists hurry to the island to meet the sunrise on the edge of the crater, inside of which is Bromo. It is such an incredible sight that it is remembered for life. Early in the morning, about four o'clock in the morning, on the sand formed as a result of constant eruptions and stretching for 10 kilometers, tourists make their way. A surface resembling a lunar valley is amazing with its unusual appearance.

Tired travelers rise about half an hour on a 300-meter staircase, covered with a thick layer of ash, after which they occupy positions on the viewing platform, from which the volcano is perfectly visible. You can also get a bouquet of dried herbs from local residents and drop it into the crater to propitiate the giant.

In the middle of a lifeless sandy valley in the dark, the outlines of steep cliffs resemble huge giants. When the haze dissipates, the mighty Bromo volcano in Indonesia, whose slopes are devoid of green vegetation, and the frozen lava and ashes resemble landscapes of scorched deserts appear in all its glory before the eyes of the guests.

The birth of a new day

The timid rays of the sun, making their way through the ridge, intensify the play of light and shadow, and only the camera of the camera captures the admirable changes occurring in the folds of the volcano's slope. Everything happens so swiftly that the human eye can not follow the lightning movement of the sun.

Light floods the whole valley, which is called the "sea of sand", leaving no chance for night gloom. A day is born, coloring mountains and plains in golden tones. From the viewing platform this unforgettable spectacle looks on one breath and bewitches with unearthly views of the majestic beauty of nature. The landscape, which more like a screensaver to a fantastic film, leaves an indelible impression.

The huge crater itself can easily be walked around the perimeter in fifty minutes, and from the hike along the edge of the living mountain it takes breath. True, not all daredevils dare to such an adventure and are limited to finding themselves on the observation deck, photographing unique landscapes. As tourists admit, if you go down forty meters into the depths, you can see how white clouds of sulfur dioxide escape from the vents.

Hindu temple and Tenggere village

At the foot of Bromo is comfortably located the active Hindu temple Pura Luhur Poten Bromo in the open air, and even from early morning you can look. Sometimes it is covered with ashes, and it is dug out by locals who believe that a dangerous monster is the entrance to the underworld.

On the edge of the caldera is the small village of Chemoró Lovang - a very popular place among travelers who come to enjoy the nature of Java. The tenggers living here who have preserved the Hindu way of life to this day worship a deity and ask the Bromo volcano not to send fiery lava to the inhabitants.

From the village begins acquaintance with the landmark, so the price of housing is unusually high. Tourists who visited here say that the cost of one room in a hotel can exceed 100 thousand rupees (about 10 dollars). But because of the very good location of the village - on the very edge of the cliff, from where the chic view of the volcano opens - from the lack of tourists no one suffers.

Bromo volcano: how to get there?

Through the town of Probolingo (Probolinggo) there is a minibus that takes you to the right place - the village of Cemoro Lawang, located in an hour's walk to the volcano. Transport goes on the road from a stop near the bus station, and the fare is 35-45 thousand rupees. A trip along the serpentine roads takes two hours.

To get to Probolingo, you can take a bus to Denpasar or Yogyakarta (11 hours), Malange (2.5 hours). Those wishing to take the train will choose the starting point of the second largest city in Indonesia - Surabaya.

If tourists go to the volcano with Bali, then their path passes through the port of Gilimanuk, located on the west of the island. The ferry which leaves on Java, will stay on the road for about an hour, and from the final point - Ketapang - it is necessary to go six hours by bus to the village of Chemoros Lavagne.

Tips for tourists

Visit the Bromo volcano in the dry season, which starts in May and ends in September.

Those who want to meet the dawn at the volcano, it is necessary to take care of warm clothes, because on the observation platform, blown by the winds, it is very cold. Mandatory and mask for the face, which will protect from the ashes, covering all roads and trails. Many even buy respirators. In addition, you will need a special cover and lenses on the camera, so take care of this in advance.

Delightful images are obtained and cloudless at night, when you can clearly see the glittering stars of the Milky Way above the volcano Bromo. The beauty of the amazing spectacle freezes the heart, and the myriad of shining lights against the background of the dark sky will remain in your memory for a long time. It seems that the stars can be touched by hand.

To climb a steep staircase you can hire a horse, but the last dozens of meters to the crater will have to go by yourself. Do not give up the services of a guide who knows which places should be avoided, because every half hour the natural attraction throws away not only ashes, but also stones. An independent campaign is associated with a share of risk.

To get to the volcano, you will have to pay in the national park a service fee (a permit) - 220 thousand rupees. The price grows depending on the season and on weekends.

A strong eruption this year

A lot of scientists are involved in problems of natural phenomena, including travel explorer Oleg Kovtun. Bromo, volcanoes Ijen and Semeru have always been a matter of concern for local residents, with fear of listening to earth tremors. Seismologists working in Indonesia warned of the danger in the summer, and in the autumn a violent eruption of the formidable giant Bromo, the most dangerous volcano, has been showing itself for more than 20 years.

To date, residents of neighboring villages have prepared for evacuation, and tourists are prohibited from approaching the crater in less than two kilometers. A huge column of ash rising above the volcano represents a beautiful and simultaneously frightening spectacle. A few months before, the monster was dusting and hummed, scaring the indigenous population. The calmly smoldering Bromo volcano, whose photo now brings real horror, exploded and turned into the wilderness of hell.

Blue lights of Ijena

In Java, many fire-breathing giants operate, the beauty of which fascinates tourists. Mighty volcanoes Bromo and Ijen have long become the visiting cards of the country, and foreigners who have heard about local attractions come to see them.

The journey to the Ijen volcano, which gave the name to the national park, is very popular. You can look inside the smoking giant and see a hot sulfur lake filled with sulfuric acid. Vapors of a dangerous substance do not allow to stay here for long. Sometimes sulfur burns, and then beautiful blue lights appear , which become the most spectacular sight.

As you probably already understood, to come to Java - this means leaving in your memory an indelible trace of involvement in the amazing phenomena of nature.
