Black screen at boot time

The owner of a personal computer, who has never seen a black screen when booting the operating system, can be considered a very lucky person. Who has found the heyday of the Windows 9x lineup, no doubt remember the blue screens of death or the BSOD (Blue Screen of Dead), which seemed to arise for no reason. However, during the years of "run-in", Microsoft collected enough statistical data to decide on the transfer of all its system products to the more promising core of NT. After that, the frequency of the appearance of BSDs decreased significantly. However, there was another problem - a black screen. A terrible name hides a completely logical behavior of the operating system, in which, due to some error, further loading of key files becomes impossible and stops at an intermediate stage. As a result, the image forming software module is rendered inoperative and there is no picture - the user sees a black screen.

Let us give an example. After pressing the power button of the computer, the usual BIOS messages appear on the screen, and the self-test passes successfully. It would seem - another 20 seconds and you can start working with Windows applications. Alas, the familiar Microsoft product logo can not be seen, because the monitor is black screen. You can wait for hours - the picture does not appear. The important point - the power LED of the monitor does not blink, symbolizing the transition of the standby mode, but it burns evenly.

This behavior of the computer indicates a malfunction of the software component. Very often this happens when mindlessly using various optimizer applications. You can try to restore working capacity, although no one will guarantee a success.

The black screen of Windows 7, the "symptoms" of which we described above, can be "cured" in the following ways:

- Immediately after the BIOS self-test is completed, you should frequently press the F8 button. If the stop error occurs after polling the key press state (most often it is), then a list of possible actions will be displayed in the text mode. It is necessary to select the "Last successful configuration" item;

- start to boot from the disk with the distribution of the operating system and at one of the stages, following the prompts, select "Recovery". The Troubleshooter will scan the system for errors and try to resolve them. This method is suitable for "breaking" the file system and the boot sector.

Sometimes the answer to the question of why when you start your computer a black screen is very simple. As a rule, all modern BIOS are configured to work with hard disks in AHCI mode, as it allows to fully use the capabilities of hard drives and controllers. If, for any reason, the BIOS settings are misplaced in standard ones, where the IDE mode is set for the disk subsystem, the system load becomes impossible due to a mismatch between the active module and the mode set by the motherboard. A similar malfunction can occur when updating (flashing) the BIOS, resetting settings due to a dead battery and after using the reset jumper. By the way, the reverse is also true: the operating system installed in the IDE will not be able to boot into the AHCI.

Of course, a black screen can be explained by a number of other reasons. But these are the topics of other articles.
