Asus N53SM: specifications, tests, comparison with competitors and reviews

Asus, being one of the most advanced notebook manufacturers, is trying to occupy all the niches that are in demand, including the category of powerful consumer notebooks.

Market positioning

The examined "machine" is located on the upper stage in the N53S line. The laptop Asus N53SM is positioned by the manufacturer as an ultimatum multimedia solution, capable of taking on tasks of any complexity. The computer will look great both on the desk of a professional photographer and an avid gamer not ready to put up with a low frame rate in games.

Equipment

In the complete set with the laptop are delivered: the charger for connection to the electric system, the battery, various paper for recycling and the warranty card for two years.

Body Design

Since the laptop is part of the N53S lineup, its exterior design does not differ from that in other notebooks of the series, which not everyone will like. Preserved the same unique, fanciful design, built around the fastening of the laptop cover. The chassis of the computer has an unusual angular bend, giving it a kind of charm. Complement the overall picture of the hole for the withdrawal of excess heat, its appearance resembling a radiator grille. In general, it is clear that Asus designers used the same moves that car designers use, trying to give their product a solid look, which makes it necessary to draw analogies with heavy equipment.

The case is made of matte plastic, strong enough, not collecting prints, dust. Minor damage and abrasions are barely noticeable. The chassis of the laptop, regardless of the specific design, causes trust, looks very reliable, the hinges holding the display are sturdy. Under the cover, the Asus N53SM looks like any other laptop company, all the same painted aluminum around the keyboard.

Communication, camera and acoustics

The laptop is equipped with a classic set of wired interfaces. On the back of the laptop are: a jack for installing the key Kensington ("anti-theft" mechanism) and a jack for connecting the charger. On the left side of the computer, there was a place for an HDMI port, a standard Ethernet port, an SDHC card slot and two second- and third-generation USB-A ports. On the right side, along with the DVD drive, there are two second-generation USB-A ports, an audio input and an audio output. From the wireless interfaces there is Wi-Fi, which supports b / n / g and Bluetooth.

Above the display is a webcam with a resolution of 2 megapixels. This, of course, is not Full HD, but no longer VGA, which means that for comfortable communication in Skype it will be enough.

Asus N53SM trump card this time was an advanced acoustic system, produced in conjunction with Bang & Olufsen. These are powerful speakers that give the computer sound a special depth at low frequencies and crystal clearness at high frequencies. In general, the sound is rich, bright, without obvious drawbacks, as on other similar laptops.

Keyboard and Touchpad

Speaking of input tools, you should start from the keyboard. Actually, the keyboard - that is why this laptop is not suitable for office workers and journalists. In attempts to create a convenient and fast tool for text input, the designers made a number of mistakes. The keys are very flimsy, unstable and located too close to each other, which inevitably leads to a large number of typos in the text.

The touchpad is standard. A very small touchpad, centered on a space. Metallic and fairly smooth. Under it are two mechanical buttons visually combined into one. To fully work with the touchpad, you need to install drivers that are specific to the Asus N53SM. Drivers can be downloaded on the official website of the manufacturer. Thanks to them the touchpad will acquire support for multi-finger gestures, including scrolling and tugging.

Display

The screen is perhaps the main disappointment in this notebook. The problem is not even in the cheap matrix and the absence of polarization layers, but in low resolution. 1366 by 768 points - not enough for comfortable work behind the display with this resolution. The user will experience a clear lack of space. Scrolling web pages will take longer. To place two windows parallel to each other is almost impossible, which will significantly affect the productivity of the owner of the computer. Glossy coating aggravates the situation, completely killing black color and creating problems when working in the sun.

Performance and memory (test results)

The hardware of the laptop is impressive. For the Asus N53SM Core i5, the configuration does not exist. Therefore, the heart of the device was the Intel Core i7 Ivy Bridge chip with the maximum acceleration up to 2200 megahertz. The quad-core processor copes with complex tasks like processing photos in Photoshop. Complementing the processor is a powerful graphics card - Nvidia GeForce 630M and 8 gigabytes of RAM.

  1. During the passage of the synthetic test wPrime, the laptop scored 9 points.
  2. During the test of the overall PCMark performance, the laptop scored 2458 points.
  3. During testing of 3DMark11 graphics performance, the laptop scored 1137 points.

Autonomy and temperature

With classic testing - brightness at 70% and the current script, rebooting the web page once a minute - the laptop worked for 5 hours. At an average load, the operating time from one charge is reduced to 2-3 hours. When playing games, the running time from one charge is reduced to 30 minutes.

Even under high load, the computer was heated to room temperature and no more. The temperature was higher in the cooler area, which is natural.

Asus N53SM: reviews

For the most part, laptop owners respond positively to the computer. People appreciated the quality of iron and interesting design. But in addition to obvious advantages, there are no less obvious shortcomings. The low resolution of the display for a premium laptop seemed to many an impermissible error. Users of the device were unhappy with the low pixel density and small space for work. Scolded and hard drive. In an expensive laptop I would like to see a modern solid-state drive instead of a classic "hard drive" with a basic rotation speed.

Instead of concluding

Asus managed to collect a more or less balanced device, with a slight advantage in favor of the exterior and computing power.

Pros:

  • Great design.
  • High-quality acoustics.
  • Quiet operation combined with low temperature.

Minuses:

  • Low resolution.
  • Slow hard drive.
