Apartheid is the legacy of the colonial system

What is apartheid and what is the reason for this concept? Any explanatory dictionary will tell you that apartheid is literally a "division", the word goes back to the language of the Boer settlers in Africa - Afrikaans. It is there, in South Africa, to seek answers to all questions.

Prerequisites for creating a mode

The oppression of indigenous blacks throughout Africa has already begun
Since the appearance of the first Europeans there. With the creation of the colonial system, namely from the 16th to the beginning of the 20th century, the practice of oppression acquired colossal proportions. The slave trade reached an unprecedented scale, there were migrations of entire peoples to other continents as servants for new owners. White masters settled in Africa itself. Especially they were attracted by the rich in diamonds and other natural minerals southern Africa. For a couple of centuries Europeans settled here, mostly Germans, Belgians and Dutch, who later created a local nationality - the Boers (in translation from the Flemish - the peasants). At the beginning of the 20th century, the British Empire attempted to present these territories to these territories . In the end, the South African Union was created as a British dominion in 1910. In the first half of XX century. Even in the United States, where there were many descendants of black slaves, despite the declared Universal Declaration of Human Rights, there were big problems with the real equality of the blacks who were still oppressed at all levels. In South Africa, this practice was consolidated at the legislative level, officially declaring that "white" and "black" are not equal. Thus, apartheid is the result of the centuries-old development of the South African Republic.

Years of apartheid

This policy was officially carried out at the state level from 1948 (and in fact before) until 1994. In essence, it consisted of the following main provisions:

  • The "black" population was deprived of all political rights (elect and be elected).
  • The apartheid regime prohibited mixed marriages.
  • Black people of Bantu were required to live in special reservations. For the exit, permission from the authorities was necessary.
  • The social sphere was also divided (hospitals, schools and other similar institutions existed separately for "whites" and "blacks"). The same applied to public places.
  • There were laws that impose an additional tax on the "white" employer who hired a black man.
  • "Black" banned any commercial activity.

For a long time, the UN and the governments of many progressive states of the world have sharply criticized this phenomenon in the country. After all, what is apartheid? It is actually legalized at the highest level of racism - something with which the human rights defenders of the whole planet fought so zealously. One of the most famous fighters against this phenomenon was Nelson Mandela, a long time political prisoner, and later (since 1994) and the first black president of South Africa. The dismantling of the regime began in 1989-90 under the intensified pressure of Europe, and especially of the United States, which again proclaimed its "crusade" for democracy throughout the world. Fearing real economic and political sanctions, the local economic elite forced to dismantle apartheid in South Africa. In 1990, there was a massive amnesty for political prisoners and the repeal of racist laws. And in 1994 the country got its first black leader in history.

What happened to them after that

Today for South Africa, apartheid is just an echo of the past. However, for a large part of the population this warm past, which was better than the gloomy present country. The access of the indigenous population to the entrepreneurial initiative, education and politics is, of course, a positive aspect. However, along with this, the level of crime in the state has dramatically increased. "Black" for the most part did not become more prosperous and happier. This social tension, multiplied by hatred of perennial exploiters, transformed the life of descendants of Boers into a struggle for survival in a crime situation.
