All about engine block

The cylinder block is the backbone of the internal combustion engine, since all the major engine assemblies and assemblies are located in it. It is this part that accounts for the bulk of the loads (up to 50 percent). Therefore, the cylinder block (VAZ 2114 including) should be made of the most durable and wear-resistant steel, on special high-precision machines.

Functions

This mechanism performs several functions at once: it is the basis for the hinged parts of the motor (cylinder head, crankcase, etc.), and also serves as a housing for housing all engine parts.

Material

Most modern cars are equipped with cast-iron cylinder blocks. Cast iron is diluted with nickel and chrome additives, making it durable and wear-resistant. The main advantages of this material are its resistance to overheating and stiffness, which is necessary with a high degree of boosting the motor. The only drawback of the cast-iron block is its heavy weight, due to which the dynamics of the car significantly deteriorates. To accelerate the car to the required speed, the engine has to produce more power, and this, in turn, entails an increased consumption of gasoline. But, as a rule, the car loses not more than 1-2 percent of the total amount of fuel consumed.

Aluminum is the less popular material for the manufacture of these products. A striking example of the use of aluminum blocks are domestic GAZel and some models of the Zhiguli. The main advantages of this material are its light weight and the best cooling properties. However, along with this motorists note the problem with the search for the necessary material from which the cylinder is made.

Mechanism arrangement

The design of the block of cylinders assumes placing of following details:

  • Engine cylinders;
  • Cylinder head;
  • Crankcase.

And now more about these devices. The engine cylinders include special sleeves that can be pressed directly into the cylinder block (most often in aluminum devices) or be removable (in the case of a cast iron mechanism). In turn, removable tools are divided into "dry" and "wet".

The cylinder head is a set of parts that are located at the top of the device. The head of the unit includes a cooling jacket, lubrication channels, as well as spark plug holes (if it is gasoline) and injectors (if it is a diesel engine). Also in the cylinder head there are openings of the inlet and outlet valve. Between the head and the block itself there is a small connecting gap in which the gasket of the cylinder block is located . If the engine is not replaced in time, the engine starts to lose its power and traction, while the risk of other parts failure is increased.

Carter is the main component part of such a detail as the cylinder block. It is a casing for a cantilever. From below, the crankcase is fixed with a special pallet. Regarding the engine block, the internal combustion engine is located at the bottom.
