The first life Abe Sapien, whose real name is Langdon Everett Kaul, held as a scholar of the Victorian era. He was a member of the Oannes Society. It was an occult organization whose members believed that all knowledge, like life itself, arose in the sea.

Once Kaul found under water a jellyfish creature, over which members of the organization conducted a secret ritual. It freed the creature and turned Everett into a completely new look. It was called Ichthio Sapien.

Representatives of Oannes saw this as a sign and decided to seal the developing organism in a water chamber. She was hid in a laboratory located under a hospital in Washington.
