A poem is an artistic word-making

Poetry is an artistic word-making, an emotional way of speaking, in which words in a work are necessarily related to rhyme and rhythm.

Verse and versification

The least poetic work is a verse. The versification is a separate layer of literary criticism devoted to the study of the theory of verse and genre features of poetic works. The verse is one line of verse text, obtained by rhythmic ordering of speech, in which the total number of regularly alternating unstressed and stressed vowels in words determines one verse or another. Alternating unstressed and percussive syllables contribute to the division of the rhymed string into stops. The fixation of stress on one of the syllables and a certain number of them determine the size of the verse.

Differences between verse and poem

From the point of view of common speech, the words "verse" and "poem" are full-fledged synonyms.

But from the standpoint of literary terminology, the situation is somewhat different. The most important difference between the verse and the poem is that the verse is the most important component of the poem. A poem is a small work of poetic creativity. It consists of several verses, formed from structurally connected rhythms of words, the accent in which is fixed on a certain syllable. That is, a poem is a verbal and artistic work, clothed in a poetic form. The whole poem traditionally consists of stanzas. Each stanza usually contains 2 to 14 verses (lines). But there are cases when the division of the poem into stanzas does not occur. Usually a poem is a work of no more than 20 rhymed stanzas. The simplest kind of poem is distich (couplet).

Variety of species and subspecies of poems

Because of its capacity and flexibility, works in verse in terms of form and organization are divided into many categories and subspecies.

For example, depending on the psychological mood and content, all poems are divided into odes, hymns, iambs, dumas, elegy, anthological verses and so on. Proceeding from the features of the composition structure among the poetic texts distinguish the following varieties: sextets, riturnels, stanzas, canons, octaves, rondels, decimes, triolets, rondos, sonnets in many of their variations. There are also a number of applied forms of the poetic work: palindrome, acrostic, charade and so on. Today, attempts to write poetry in prose have become quite popular. Poetry - creativity is quite complex, but at the same time very interesting.
