What are the symptoms of the neuritis of the facial nerve?

Neuritis of the facial nerve (Bell's paralysis) is manifested in partial or complete violation of the functions of the facial nerve, which controls the mimic muscles of the face. Symptoms of neuritis of the facial nerve manifest unexpectedly, or can develop within two days. The disease can occur at any age, but most often the risk is for pregnant women, patients with diabetes mellitus, who have just passed the flu, ARVI or hypothermia.

How to identify neuritis of the facial nerve? Symptoms, treatment of the disease

As a rule, the first signs of the disease are noticed by others - this is a speech disorder and a curvature of the nasolabial fold. Often the symptoms of the neuritis of the facial nerve are manifested in the morning - then they are noticed by the victim himself. Of the other symptoms of the disease, one can call the burning or numbness of a half of the face, the descent from one side of the corner of the mouth, the asymmetry of the face. The patient may have increased susceptibility to loud sounds, dry eyes or, on the contrary, tearing, headache and pain behind the ear, difficulty in eating, change in taste perception.

Neuritis of the facial nerve: causes

The causes of Bell's paralysis are still not established. There is a theory that the matter is in some living in the redistribution of nerve cells virus HSV-1, which is activated under certain conditions. It multiplies, in the course of its activity producing toxins, causing inflammation of the nerve and impairing the patency of the nerve impulse. Among other alleged causes of neuritis are tumors and ear infections, trauma, Lyme disease, strokes, brain tumors, etc. If the symptoms of facial nerve neuritis are manifested gradually over a period of weeks or months, then this is some other disease that only a doctor can diagnose -neurologist.

Methods of therapy

To confirm the diagnosis, you will need to undergo a comprehensive examination, after which the doctor will be able to prescribe the appropriate treatment. In the process of examination - to exclude other pathologies - an MRI can be prescribed. To monitor the process of restoring the ability of nerve fibers to carry out impulses, it is sometimes prescribed by EMG. It should be noted that the symptoms of neuritis of the facial nerve in some cases may not pass without a trace: for example, there will remain a noticeable asymmetry of the face. However, eighty percent of patients with neuritis after complex therapy are completely cured, without consequences. Treatment involves the use of corticosteroids, antiviral agents, a complex of vitamins and trace elements. Physiotherapy procedures are not excluded. Very rarely, only in cases where mechanical compression of the nerve fiber is manifested, surgical intervention is required. Typically, doctors are limited to using acupuncture and infrared laser.

Concomitant problems

In case of paralysis, the closure of the eyelid is possible, in which case it is necessary to prevent the eyeball from drying out. Eye care measures include the use of artificial tears for moisturizing (every one to two hours), wearing a wet bandage or glasses, applying a special eye ointment for the night. It is important during the treatment to be observed by a doctor who controls the condition of the eye. Be healthy!
