The most popular religion of Brazil, as well as the ancient beliefs of local people

One of the largest states in Latin America is Brazil. Probably, this is why the country takes the sixth place in the world in terms of the number of inhabitants, which are quite diverse in their nationality. That is why the religion of Brazil is not one, but many. The indigenous people profess their own, the newcomers are the most famous in the world. We will talk more about this in this article.

Religions with the most followers

So, the main religion of Brazil, which adheres to more than eighty percent of the population - is Christianity. However, it is not homogeneous, because there are more Catholics in the country (about sixty-four percent). Brazil is considered one of the largest Catholic states in the world. Also, the number of Protestants has recently increased.

Catholicism appeared in Brazil together with the Portuguese colonialists and Jesuit missionaries. During this time, a large number of churches and cathedrals appeared on the territory of the state. The main one is the Cathedral of Nossa Senhora de Aparecida, which is located in the state of São Paulo.

The second religion of Brazil in terms of the number of believers is Protestantism. Its main direction is evangelical. However, in fact, across the country you can find a large number of the most diverse areas that are known in the world. And it is not at all necessary that they have a built cathedral, many function in ordinary rooms or apartments. It is noteworthy that in rural areas it is these churches that replace the educational system, which functions poorly within the state.

Other types of religions

Of course, there is more than one religion of Brazil. Very popular are the various syncretic cults that have emerged as a result of the fusion of several religions and ancient cults. For example, umbanda. A widespread religion, which has about a million followers. It was due to a mixture of Catholicism and African beliefs, which were brought to Brazil by African slaves. They were forbidden to perform their rituals, many slave owners tried to convert them to Catholicism. Therefore, the slaves had to look for an alternative to their faith. So there was umbanda.

No less popular is spiritualism, which first originated in the US, and then spread around the world. He very well settled in Brazil and found his followers. In this country there is also the Brazilian Spiritist Federation. Also in the country there are communities of Muslims, Jews and followers of Adventism. Of course, they are much smaller.

Also in the territory of Brazil live Buddhists. Their community is the largest in Latin America in this state. The largest Buddhist temple is in Kotia and is called Zu Lai. On its territory there is also the University.

Pagan beliefs of local people

There are also local beliefs. They can be referred to as candomblé. It is an ancient pagan religion (it was also brought from Africa, but has not changed), which consists in the fact that its followers worship the Orisha spirits. Each adept chooses a special spirit-patron (Orisha) and prays to him, asking for intercession and help.

This religion of Brazil is held in terreira - a special place for ritual activities. It is like a monastery, the main in it are the father of the saint and the mother of the saint. Periodically the followers of candomblai close in the monastery and read their prayers there. The cult practices the following rituals:

  • A sacrifice for the satisfaction of certain spirits;
  • Throwing sixteen cockleshells in order to then read the fallen combination and find out your fate;
  • Dancing for the spirits, performed massively (thanks to them you can buy various patrons).

A remarkable fact is that in terrerus, according to tradition, there are spirits in every corner. Usually, at the entrance of someone in this room, the mother of the saint appeases them (casting cereals and pouring water).

Conclusion

Probably, because of a large number of religions in the country there has been a mixture of different cultures. Already many residents do not profess the purity of belief. They can visit the Catholic church and at the same time a terreiro with a religious ceremony candomblé. Also, many come to the Buddhist temple, because it is quite handsome and there is a large Buddhist community in the country. In any case, almost every ceremony contains the Brazilian flavor of the Latin American country.
