Poetry. Distinctive features of a poetic work

Although at the present time poetry is in decline, but it is impossible to live without it at all. It reflects the spiritual side of our life and will necessarily revive in new trends, with new names. But if you now ask an adult who does not deal with literature: "Name the distinctive features of a poetic work," he is unlikely to answer. Although this is necessarily studied in schools.

The Poetics of Aristotle. How did it all start?

A huge number of texts are written about images in the literature and semantics of the text. But the very first analyst of poetry, who tried to create a theory of versification, was Aristotle. In that unfinished work that came down to us under the title "Poetics", he mentioned that poetry is one of the arts, designed to please a person.

Distinctive features of the poetic work of Aristotle are: observance of the meter, harmony, order and art of the word. Expressed in modern language, the art of speech was the imagery of speech.

Without which there will be no poem? Distinctive features of a poetic work

So, what signs of a poetic work can be identified as absolute, without which the poem will be a faded parody?

  1. Form. Fiction differs imagery, which is achieved by various comparisons and other expressive means.
  2. Rhyme and rhythm. Poetry is based on the ability to alternate percussion and unstressed syllables. From this depends the melodic pattern of the verse. Rhyme is rich or poor, but it is an indispensable link. Of course, white verses and verse are written without rhyme. But in them prevail significant, expressive artistic images that hold the attention of the reader.
  3. Emotionality. Artistic work is designed to influence the feelings of the reader, to the deep impulses of his soul.
  4. The syntactic integrity of the entire poem. In addition, the poem is a short work, it is not written in sheets, like a story. Therefore, it is desirable to present all ideas so that they are syntactically capacious.

Harmony is also important for a good poem. Excessively emotional or art-saturated product will soon cause antipathy. Hence the conclusion that in classical theory the distinctive features of a poetic work are, first of all, a sense of harmony of images, sounds and emotions and observance of rhythm.

Modern views on versification

Poetry is also a science. Yuri Lotman insisted on this - an art critic and a literary critic who received the Nobel Prize. He was the teacher of a new era.

But in our time gradually all the great schools leave. Symbolism, romanticism, modernism, even postmodernism in literature are already gone at sunset. But still many people write their poems, not trying to correspond to any school, and therefore poetry lives.

What are the distinctive features of the poetic work now? Today, avant-gardism is becoming more and more vocal. Modern authors-poets are guided by the muse, intuition. And the only feature is the denial of dogma, freedom of expression.
