In this article, we want to talk about what is parsnip. This medicinal plant has long been known to people. The mention of it was found in the herbalists of Dioscorides, who recommended the plant as a diuretic for coughing, to increase appetite, as an analgesic for renal, gastric and hepatic colic. Now the scope of parsnip is much wider.

Places of growth of parsnip

Pasternak sowing is also called parsnip meadow, common, white carrot, spindle root. This is a two-year herbaceous plant. It belongs to the genus Pasternak of the umbellate family. The plant grows in height from thirty centimeters and up to one meter. Pasternak sowing was obtained as a result of the centuries-old excretion from a wild plant, which is very common in Ukraine, the Caucasus, Western Siberia, America, Western Europe, Turkey and many other countries.

What distinguishes the cultural view from the wild, is the presence of a thick spicy-sweet root.

Description of the plant

Pasternak sowing has an erect sulcus-faceted stalk, the upper part of which is branched and has a margin. The upper leaves are large enough, and the lower ones are small with a short stalk. The flowers of the plant are very small yellow color collected in complex umbrellas from eight to fifteen rays.

Seeds have a round elongated shape, they are flat brown. The root of parsnip is thick, white with a spicy smell and sweet to taste. In shape it resembles carrots. He blossoms only for the second year in late summer. And the fruits of the parsnip of the sowing season ripen in September.

Useful properties of the plant

As a cultural plant, the parsnip of the sowing (photo is given in the article) became known as far back as the twelfth century, but it was widely used in the eighteenth century. In Russia, the plant appeared even before potatoes.

It has a complex and at the same time a rich composition (useful substances). At the root of parsnip there are essential oils, thiamin, vitamins B1, C, B2, PP, riboflavin, nicotinic acid, pectin, starch and other substances. Flavonoid glycosides, furocoumarins, are found in fruits (this is what we call seeds). A essential oil in them contains from 1.5 to 3.6 percent. In addition, it contains octyl butyl ether of butyric acids, which actually gives such a peculiar smell of parsnip.

Pasternak sowing, the use of which is not limited to cooking alone, also has medicinal properties. Ancient Greek physicians, for example, used it as a means of exciting appetite, as a diuretic and analgesic, as a remedy for colic, as well as for improving sexual function (enhances male strength).

Use of parsnips in modern medicine

The healing properties of the plant are confirmed by modern medicine, and traditional medicine. Pasternak sowing (the pharmacopeia contains preparations based on parsnip) is now actively used in the pharmaceutical industry, such drugs as Beroxan, Pastinicin, Eupiglin and many others are manufactured.

Pastinacin is an antispasmodic agent that is used for angina pectoris, neurosis and cardioneurosis. Assign this medicine and with spasms of the gastrointestinal tract, as well as with problems with biliary tract, kidneys.

Beroksan gives good results in the treatment of psoriasis, nesting baldness, vitiligo and other skin diseases. The drug is used not only externally, but also inside.

Fruits of parsnip plant seed contain biologically active compounds that help fight various ailments. Root plants and leaves are also used for medicinal purposes.

Decoction of the roots is good for coughing as an expectorant (softens and helps to get out of sputum), and water tincture is used as a tonic for restoring severe patients.

In addition, parsnip significantly improves digestion, promotes vascular strengthening, for this reason it is used to treat and prevent vascular and cardiac diseases. It also helps with cholelithiasis and nephrolithiasis, with nervous diseases and pancreatitis, bronchitis, pneumonia, gout, etc.

But the decoction of the roots of parsnip beneficially affects the growth of hair. Grated freshly digested root of the plant well removes renal, gastric, hepatic colic (as an analgesic).

Preparation of broths

To prepare the broth from the roots, you need to pour a teaspoon of ground roots with 0.5 liters of water. Then boil the liquid for about ten minutes. Ready to drain the broth and drink all within one day.

To prepare the broth from the leaves of parsnips, a tablespoon of the crushed leaves of the plant should be poured into ½ liter of water, then boil for ten minutes on low heat, then drain the broth. Drug is taken for ¼ cup three times a day. It is better to do this twenty minutes before eating. In this schedule, the broth is drunk for one week, and then another seven days for ¾ cup.

In folk medicine, as a remedy, juice from the roots of parsnip is used, because it is rich in silicon, potassium, phosphorus, chlorine, sulfur and other substances. It can be used for brittle nails. Also, the juice has a positive effect on the work of the brain, lungs and bronchi, it is drunk with tuberculosis, emphysema, pneumonia, mental disorders, and also used as a tonic. Freshly prepared juice is drunk on a tablespoon three to four times a day before meals with the addition of a small amount of honey.

Since ancient times, the appetite was improved with the help of alcohol tincture of the roots of parsnip (for this, moonshine was used). Of course, this is not the best way to solve the problem, but if a person abuses alcohol, then tincture from the plant at least benefits.

Postoperative patients to restore their strength can be given a water tincture from the roots. For a hundred milliliters of liquid, put a tablespoon of honey. Take tincture three times a day for half an hour before meals. The course of treatment is one month.

Infusion of parsnip

Infusion of parsnips has a soothing effect. He even relieves spasms of blood vessels. He is prescribed for all kinds of neuroses, muscle cramps, hypertension, angina pectoris, for the normalization of sleep.

There is another variant of tincture, which is used with weakened immunity. Two table spoons of a root put in a thermos and fill in with a glass of boiled water, insist approximately twelve hours. Next, a spoonful of honey is added and taken one tablespoon three to four times a day for half an hour before meals.

Pasternak with baldness

The healing properties of parsnips are so good that it is even used for baldness. The mask for the hair is being prepared. Dry plant powder mixed with moisturizing balm. The mixture is applied to the head, it should be kept for about thirty minutes, and then washed off. Such a tool has a good effect on the growth of hair, while the hair becomes thicker.

You can also rub the tincture into the scalp after sauna, bath, when the pores are open. This also works well for alopecia.

Growing parsnips

Cultivate this culture is not difficult. He is unpretentious and grows massively in gardens and orchards. He prefers sunny places and moisture. Pasternak is sown, like carrots, in rows, in autumn or in spring.

To improve the germination, the seeds are soaked before planting. Harvest is not collected in the early spring before the release of leaves and fall. If you leave a few roots until the next year, you can get the seeds of the plant, but the root itself will already lose its healing properties.

Pasternak in cooking

Currently, parsnip is widely used in cooking and confectionery. The roots of the plant are dried, eaten stewed, even boiled and put as seasoning in salads, soups, meat, vegetables and side dishes.

Contraindications

Pasternak should not be used in phytodermatosis. Do not also give it to very young children, you should apply caution to people of advanced age, as well as not to use it for allergies to parsnips. It is worth remembering that the plant contains substances that increase skin sensitivity to the sun. Therefore, light-skinned people before going out to the sun in the warm season it is better not to drink tinctures and broths from parsnip.
