Lappeenranta Airport. History of origin and development

Lappeenranta is a large Finnish city that is located near the border with Russia. It is located on the southern shore of Lake Saimaa, sixty kilometers from Vyborg, two hundred kilometers from St. Petersburg. The city was founded in 1649, today it is one of the largest cultural and economic centers of a region such as South Karelia.

Lappeenranta Airport was founded in 1918 as a special military airfield. It is located a few kilometers from the city center and thirty kilometers from the Finnish city of Imatra. In the beginning of 2009, Lappeenranta Airport receives international status, and Irish and Latvian national airlines open the first routes in several of the most popular European destinations. At present, the annual passenger traffic is about one hundred fifty to one hundred and sixty thousand people. To get from the city center to the stop "Lappeenranta Airport" you can on the city bus or by taxi for ten to thirteen euros.

In the terminal building there are several catering outlets, where you can have a snack, drink a cup of tea or coffee, warm up the baby food if necessary. In addition, everywhere there is access to free wireless Internet, there are children's rooms, postal services and lost and found. Directly in front of the terminal there is a small parking lot with a limited number of free places where you can park the car for one hour. The subsequent payment for parking is carried out both by credit card and in cash.

The relatively close location of this airport from St. Petersburg contributes to the fact that an increasing number of Russians are starting to fly to European countries from Finland.

This turns out to be cheaper and much safer. At the same time, it takes only several hours to reach the Finnish border. It is for these reasons that every year, tourists from Russia are increasingly using the airport in Lappeenranta as a transit point for the organization of further routes across Europe. About 50% of all passenger traffic today is made up of citizens of the Russian Federation. Mass distribution of this phenomenon, in addition to geographical proximity, is promoted by the fact that many European air carriers offer air tickets for their passengers at prices much lower than those of Russian airlines.

If you combine all of the above together, it turns out that to come to the airport of Lappeenranta and from here to get to the final point of travel is very convenient and profitable in terms of financial costs. Moreover, the transfer from St. Petersburg is carried out constantly. Lappeenranta Airport can be reached either by shuttle bus or by comfortable minibuses. A large number of agencies organize today individual and group visits at any time convenient for the client, escorted and met on arrival.
