Lake Otradnoe: description, characteristics, flora and fauna

Lake Otradnoe (Priozersky District, Leningrad Region) is the second largest reservoir of the Karelian Isthmus located in the Veseloy River basin. It got its name in 1948. Before that, the lake for several centuries was called Pyhä-järvi, which in Finnish means "Sacred (or holy) lake".

Scientific-experimental station "Otradnoe"

In the northern part of the lake, on the peninsula, since 1946 is located the scientific and experimental station of the Botanical Institute. Komarov RAS. The station owns an area of 54 hectares. In its territory there is a park of dendrology research and experimental fields and plantations, where more than four hundred unique plants are brought from different parts of the globe.

Where the shore is sandy, the bottom is visible up to 2 meters. The maximum and minimum depth is 28 and 7.5 meters. Area - 72.6 square meters. Km. In recent years, the lake, more precisely its western part, is very actively overgrown, mostly reed and reed, although due to strong surf, which is not uncommon here, the vegetation is poorly developed. Only 6 km separates Otradnoe from Lake Ladoga, between them there are several streams, there are swamps, therefore the ecosystems of the two reservoirs are partially interconnected.

Use of a pond

Lake Otradnoe is located in a relatively clean environment, only slightly spoiled in recent years by the construction of coastal cottage villages and roads leading to them. But there is no industry near, this explains the purity of water, soil and air in the area of the reservoir. There are recreation centers all year round here, so there is no shortage of holidaymakers.

Flora and fauna

Clean air is promoted by a large number of coniferous trees. Almost all sides of the sandy shoreline of the lake is surrounded by coniferous forests. Most of it is pine. Almost entirely covered with pine trees and Barsuchiy Island. Due to the fact that Lake Otradnoye is surrounded by mixed and coniferous forests growing along the entire perimeter of the coastline, there live foxes and deer, wolves and wild boars, moose and bears, ferrets and rabbits.

The world here is rich and feathered. Ornithologists number almost 280 of their species. Wild swamps and ducks are seen on the swamps. Often there are wood grouses, grouse and black grouse. The flora of these places is extensive and diverse - there are at least thirty species of medicinal plants alone. The forests surrounding the lake are rich in mushroom and berry places. Some of the species of local vegetation are listed in the Red Book.

Lake Otradnoe: fishing

In Otradnoye a huge number of fish species: from roach and perch to pike perch, pike and trout. Fans of winter fishing are waiting for whitefish, ruff, burbot and perch. In the spring, the roach and the scoundrel are caught most of all.

To get to the fans of fishing to the lake is not difficult. If you walk on foot, then from the station "Sukhodolye" to the pond is 2 kilometers. Also there are country roads, which can be driven by car. Near the lake passes Priozerskoe highway.
