"Girl on the ball", a picture of Picasso: the history of creation and the plot

In the Pushkin Museum of Moscow there are many wonderful paintings that amaze the imagination of true connoisseurs of art and simple excursionists. Artists Monet, Renoir, Van Gogh, Chagall - these names have forever entered the treasury of world painting. And "The Girl on the Ball" (Picasso's painting) is one of those brilliant works, before which one can spend hours idly watching, enjoying the magic play of color and light, the amazing skill of the great artist. This picture is like a fairy tale, in which one wants to believe, despite all the global difficulties of human existence.

"Pink" period

Each work of a great artist has its own history. This picture is no exception. Young Pablo Picasso, settling at the beginning of the last century in Paris, comprehended the world of bohemia. In his poor art studio in the winter even the water froze - it was so cold. And in Montmartre, electricity was often cut off. But on the doors of the workshop there was an inscription "Meeting place of poets", pleasing to the eye. The world of bohemia, rejected by the philistines, firmly enters into the life of Pablo Picasso. A theme of kinship and universal relations - in the painting of the artist in that period. The main characters, the heroes of the paintings - wandering circus artists, comedians, artists and dancers, who, contrary to public taste, attracted the attention of young talent, caused in him genuine interest and interest.

At that time (1905), the artist was often inclined to select the most common subjects for his works. The heroes of this painting - stray acrobats - capture the imagination of Pablo Picasso: a girl on the ball, fragile and tender, an athlete embodying masculinity and reliability. But the author does not just copy life. He recreates it with his art, skill. And the work "Girl on the ball" (Picasso's painting of the "pink" period) is a vivid example of this! We seem to see dreams, love, devotion and tenderness, strength and courage. Necessity to each other, because the work of wandering circus is dangerous and not easy, but they get for it a pittance.

Painting by Pablo Picasso "The Girl on the Ball": a plot

On the canvas are a sitting adult male acrobat and a fragile girl who gracefully balances on the ball. It is in contrasting these two figures, their plastics and massiveness, grace and strength, that many critics see the zest of the work. The theme of friendship, inner community and mutual assistance is also visible in the work. The artist is attracted by the language of contrasts and plastics, which contributes to creating harmony in the composition of the picture. After all, if you only imagine a balancing girl for a moment, then without the tacit support of a sitting circus she can instantly lose her balance by slipping from the ball. The leg of a man bent at right angles is perceived figuratively, as a certain support for the fragile figure of a girl.

All the magic that permeates the work of the great master, is based on the magic of lighting, the consonance of colors, the accuracy of the strokes. As if the figures have no sense of constraint, and the space of the canvas is expanded and filled with air. At the same time, the author also uses the coarsening of the texture of painting, the style reversal, which was manifested in earlier years.

Despite the apparent roughness of the image, the work carries a light and gentle mood, described in pink and blue tones, with shades of ash. These tones add to the impression of the romantic reality of life.

History of the painting after writing

It is known that Pablo Picasso in 1906 was pleased when the collector Vollar bought from him already 30 paintings for only two thousand francs. After that, the canvas was also in the collection of the famous Gertrude Stein, and in the assembly of Kanweiler. The industrial collector and philanthropist Morozov bought it in 1913 for 16 thousand already. So "Girl on the ball", a picture of Picasso, was in Russia, where it still is in the Pushkin Museum.
