This is the oldest church in the city. According to legend, it was built by Saint Ambrose in 386 on the burial place of ancient Christians - victims of the persecution of the Romans. Then it was called the Basilica of the Martyrs. Later, the building was rebuilt many times, and by 1099 it completely corresponded to the Romanesque style.

Two belfries are attached to the basilica. Inside the building is decorated with a unique and valuable mosaic depicting Christ the Almighty (13th century). In 1943 during the bombing of the basilica was seriously damaged, it took more than ten years to restore it.
