Faculties VGIK: acting, directing, cameraman. All-Russian State Institute of Cinematography named after SA Gerasimov

There are not many talented workers in the field of cinema in Russia, but they do exist. And most of them graduated from the leading Russian cinematographic high school - the All-Russian State Institute of Cinematography named after SA Gerasimov.

About the Institute

Named the VGIK in honor of the great Soviet director, actor and screenwriter - Sergei Apollinarievich Gerasimov. This man has made a huge contribution to the development of cinematography in Russia. During his life, he received a huge number of various awards, including the Lenin Prize, three times the Stalin Prize, the State Prize of the USSR, and was awarded the title of Hero of Socialist Labor.

In addition to his cinematographic activities, Gerasimov was actively involved in politics, was a member of the party VKP (b), and also a deputy of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR 3-4 convocations.

The institute itself was actually founded on September 1, 1919, but at that time it was called the "State School of Cinematography." His today's name he received in 1938, though, then instead of the word "All-Russian" used the word "All-Union".

Faculties

All-Russian State Institute of Cinematography named after SA Gerasimov is engaged in the preparation of almost all categories of specialists in the field of cinema. The main faculties are as follows:

  • Actorsky.
  • Directed.
  • Art.
  • Faculty of Producers and Economics.
  • Operator's.
  • Scenario.
  • Animation and multimedia.

All faculties of VGIK prepare specialists of the highest level, and the recruitment of students takes place on the principle of workshops. The bottom line is that one of the teachers in one or another field opens up a workshop in which a certain number of students are recruited and supervises their training throughout the term. Students attend lectures of professors (VGIK), the specialties of which cover various subjects, but the master is responsible for students in the first place and leads the main professional subjects.

Direction faculty

The profession of the director is one of the most important in the production of the film, because this person decides what the tape will be about, what it will be, who will be in it, and, accordingly, it is on his shoulders that the main burden of responsibility for the success of the project falls. The Directorate of the VGIK for many years of work has produced many talented and successful directors who have contributed both to the domestic and world cinematography. Among them are such people as:

  • Andrei Tarkovsky.
  • Nikita Mikhalkov.
  • Vsevolod Pudovkin.
  • Sergei Bondarchuk and other talented figures of cinema.

The faculty of the faculty trains specialists in four different directions: game cinema, non-fiction (documentary) cinema, sound engineering and animation. These directions are very different, and the approach to work in them differs radically, that's why each of them creates its own workshop.

The term of training in general is 5 years. During this time, students attend lectures, both in the main disciplines directly related to directing, and on general education. The latter include, for example, the history of world cinema and the history of fine arts, as well as a number of similar subjects.

In addition to lectures, future directors perform practical assignments, and at the very end of the course they shoot their main work, which is a full-length short film.

For incoming

The recruitment takes place on a competitive basis and is carried out in 3 stages. The first is an interview. It passes after the applicant has already sent all the necessary documents. At the interview, the commission determines the general cultural level of a person, as well as the degree of his awareness in different areas of art. At the same stage, the creative work of the entrant is analyzed, which must be attached to the documents when sent. These works represent some of the most successful photographs taken by a person, a biographical sketch, and also a story about an interesting event from life.

The second stage is a creative test. It is also a written work, but this time the applicant writes it on the proposed topic and in the building of the institute. The work is not more than 6 hours.

The third stage is a professional test. This stage consists of two parts. The first is reading a passage from fiction, a poem and a fable. The entrant chooses the source texts independently. The second part consists of various creative tasks that will help determine the degree of development of the creative thinking of the entrant. It is not possible to describe these tasks, since they can be completely different, but the common thing in them is that in any case it will be necessary to show creativity and non-standard thinking.

That's all. After the entrant has passed these 3 stages, he can only wait for the results.

Actors

Despite the fact that the faculties of VGIK produce specialists mainly in the field of cinema, the acting department also prepares theatrical artists.

The term of study at this faculty will be 4 years. During this time, students go through all stages of becoming a professional actor, starting with the drawing of small etudes, and reaching large performances and films. The basis for teaching is the technique of the famous Russian figure of theater and cinema, Stanislavsky.

The students of the faculty of academy study not only professional subjects, such as scenic speech or stage movement, but also general education, which includes the history of world cinema and theater.

How are the exams

Admission to the faculty of acting also occurs in 3 stages. At the first stage, the entrants pass photos and video samples, in order to demonstrate their ability to keep in front of the camera.

The second stage is a creative test - reading by heart selected by the entrant of the poem, a piece of prose, as well as fables.

The third stage is an interview. It is conducted in order to determine the general cultural level of the entrant. Members of the Commission ask a variety of questions, one way or another relating to the subject of art and acting.

After all three stages, the commission determines the list of those admitted to the acting faculty and recommended for budget places, that is, those who scored the highest number of points.

Cameramen

The cameraman plays a huge role in the perception of the picture by the viewer, because he is responsible for how expressive the frame will be, and how much the viewer can understand from it.

The operator's work is difficult not only creatively, but also technically, because modern cinema equipment is at a very high level and not everyone can cope with it.

Graduates who graduated from the Cinematography Department of VGIK, leave the institute as real professionals. They are able to create beautiful videos and photos, as well as they have the opportunity to take part in large-scale film projects and declare themselves to the whole world.

The term of study is 5 years, and for that time students are engaged, both theoretical and practical work, honing their skills in photo and video.

Admission process

For admission to the operator's faculty, as well as to the other faculties of the VGIK, it is necessary to send a folder with documents, but in addition it is necessary to attach a portfolio of the most successful photographs, after which the commission evaluates these works and conducts a number of additional tests. If the entrant copes with all technical tasks, he is invited to an interview where the commission determines its final decision.

Finally

On the territory of the Russian Federation there are not so many universities that are engaged in the training of specialists in the field of cinematography. This is due in large part to the fact that the profession does not require a large number of people who are ready to just work for money. It requires a creative approach, a deep understanding of their business and a high level of professionalism. And they are taught all this in the leading Russian cinematographic university, the faculties of VGIK we examined in the framework of this article.
