Exhaust system: self-tuning

Currently, the tuning is done on different parts of the machines. The exhaust system is no exception. It is also often subject to change. Thanks to this, not only does the power increase, but also the appearance of the car acquires a qualitatively different style.

The exhaust system on modern machines is necessary for the removal of gases emitted by the intake manifold of the motor. Thanks to it, environmental safety is ensured. At the same time, the system silences the noise generated when the motor is running. It includes:

  • An intake manifold for assembling the exhaust gases and transferring them to the pipe;
  • A catalyst that is a barrier to hydrocarbons and carbon dioxide due to their afterburning by a special system;
  • Silencer, reducing the speed of gases and noise.

Is it possible to do without a system

In principle, the car can function, even if there is no exhaust system. Tuning it, of course, is not necessary. But it is usually not done at all in order to comply with accepted norms.

Without an exhaust system the driver of the car can easily be fined, since the car will make a loud noise. At the same time, it is unlikely that he will be able to capture everything that is happening around him. And this, in turn, can cause an accident. In addition, the exhaust gases will flow out of the pipe under the car. And while you are standing somewhere at the crossroads, they will penetrate directly into the salon, because of what you can poison yourself and even lose consciousness.

Of course, this will affect the fuel consumption, which will significantly increase. But this in comparison with other negative consequences is the most harmless of all. The exhaust system contains lambda sensors that fix oxygen. Since the system in the pipe will not work, they will give incorrect readings. Oxygen there will be much more, so the electronic system will automatically "fix" the situation by injecting more and more fuel. Gasoline will begin to flow in the high-speed mode, but the dynamics of driving, unfortunately, will not. Is that the motor will roar deafeningly.

Why do tuning

Often, car owners think about remaking when the exhaust system goes out of order. Tuning of this kind can be of several types. Part of the work can be done independently. Others are better to trust professionals.

Some people like the peculiar sporting roar of a machine, which is achieved by audio tuning. To do this, remove the catalyst and change it to a special flame arrester. The work is completed by the installation of a special silencer called "ramjet".

The cheapest will cost a visual tuning. For this, special mufflers are installed on the muffler, decorating it with a different color scale. Such an alteration will make the car more stylish and spectacular. A well thought-out nozzle is really capable of completing the unique image of the car.

Another modification, which is subjected to the exhaust system, is technical tuning. This work is done to increase the power of the motor. Usually the indicator increases by ten to twelve percent. But this kind of alteration can hardly be accomplished without the help of specialists. He will not only cost a pretty penny, but also fuel will "eat" more.

Is it worth it to do on your own

Whether to decide whether to trim the exhaust system with your own hands or not, depends on the capabilities of the car owner and the availability of equipment and tools. For example, only for installing a straight-through silencer will require welding, a bulgarian and a device for bending tubes. And of course, the acquisition of a new silencer.

In addition to material carriers, it is necessary to master certain theoretical knowledge, since it will require an exact calculation of all the details from which the muffler will be made. It must strictly comply with the technical specifications of the model of the car on which it is installed.

Therefore, if you want to improve the appearance, but do not spend too much on it is enough to buy a patch or order a backlight. It is not possible to establish this by yourself. But more serious work is better to entrust to professionals.

Sports "bank"

The majority of silencers designed for tuning are universal. But you need to consider the size of the part. For amateur performance recommend "bank".

The car owner must decide on the material. It can be a dull white metal, nickel plating, blued steel. Someone prefers not one, but two outputs, sometimes with bending up or down. Of course, I care about the sound quality, which will result in the result. But here we must bear in mind that the timbre and tonality, which are heard at the beginning, will become somewhat different in time.

And everything will change?

Of course, by making a replacement for the "bank", it is not necessary to expect that the technical characteristics will be qualitatively different. This detail will only improve the sound of your car and appearance. But despite the formidable "growl", the power of such a car will remain the same. To increase the figure, the replacement must be subjected to the whole exhaust system. Tuning then will get a perfect look.

Budget variant of qualitative alteration

The price of "banks" depends on the model chosen. The brand, the quality of materials and production technology - all this will affect the final cost. It should be taken into account that domestic silencers made of stainless steel are often better in quality than imported ones. But the price they have more affordable.

Basses can be achieved not only due to the pipe, but also by a significant increase in the diameter at the outlet. The presence of a synthetic fiber in the "bank" suppresses high noise, but does not add power.

So, with competent modernization of the exhaust system, but at the same time in the budget execution, you can limit yourself to a "bank" (in addition, a zeroer and a throttle with a considerable diameter will be required), as well as a "spider". The power will then increase by five percent.

"Spider"

In general, power losses occur at the exhaust manifold. Therefore, often tuning the exhaust system of the VAZ, UAZ or foreign cars is done with the replacement of the regular on the "spider". It has a different shape and pipe joints with outlet windows.

"Spiders" are long and short. On the four-cylinder engine, for example, tuning the "Audi" - the exhaust system of the long model, will be built according to the formula: 4/2/1, and for the short one - 4/1.

The latter type is usually used for high-powered motors, which have wide-phase camshafts.

For conventional cars, if, for example, the tuning of the UAZ exhaust system is performed, the 4/2/1 scheme is suitable. The power here will be added by five to seven percent. In addition, there will be a wide range, in contrast to the previous case, where power increase is possible only on a narrow range.

When using a co-current system, it is possible to provide pipes of larger diameter, as well as low-resistance resonators. Hard connections are replaced by corrugations and spherical species. The latter will not create parasitic resonance frequencies. But unfortunately, they are short-lived.

In practice, for a motor whose volume is one and a half liters, and the work does not exceed eight thousand revolutions, a diameter of forty-five to fifty millimeters and a length of three to three and a half meters is sufficient. A larger diameter will be required for those cars whose engine is more spacious. For example, if you are tuning the exhaust system "Mercedes".
