Doric Order

Ancient monuments of architecture do not spare time, but they continue to amaze many generations with their harmonious forms. A festive and even somewhat pompous Doric style, so beloved by the architects of Greece and Rome, is practically absent today in the modern streets, but still admires. It was created by ancient architects, who manually created amazing beauty.

At the turn of the 6th century BC, two amazing artistic directions were formed in architecture. This is Ionian and Doric style. Day after day, architects with the help of builders sought the perfection of proportions and shapes that were tested on magnificent built temples and palaces. They tried to ensure that the Doric order looked immaculate, because it was the foundation of the architecture of that time. The final formation of the style ended around 600 BC.

Initially, in ancient Greece, rectangular buildings predominated, and the material that was used for construction was fragile clay and reeds. In place of such a short-lived component for the construction of housing came a more solid, decorated with new decorative finishes and sculpture temple construction.

The endless aspiration of ancient architects for monumentality and the creation of ideal proportions in the buildings contributed to the formation of new, later classic styles. The most significant of all - the Roman and Greek Doric order. The Roman order was executed with mutules and with denticulus teeth.

Speaking of the difference, you can see that the classic Doric order column lacked a base or it was performed with a strong refinement. On the trunk were vertical grooves, which were called flutes. They closely adjoined each other, and also there was no habitual path between them. In this style flute performed with particularly sharp edges and were not deep.

The Doric capital is a round cushion (echine) and a thick square plate (abacus). On the top of the columns, the capital, lies the main load of the higher parts. Doric capital has a feature, expressed in the fact that the echine is processed by the ionics, and under the shelf of the abaca is a heel, which is decorated with exquisite ornamentation.

The entablature consists of an architrave, a frieze and a cornice. Ekhin is a round cushion curvilinear profile and square abaca, and the frieze, in turn, is divided into horizontal triglyphs and metopes. A unique Doric order was developed in the architecture of Ancient Greece. It is here that masters began to build more durable stone churches, using these decorations. One of such structures in Greece is the temple of Artemis in Kerkyra.

The highest flowering Doric order was in the VI-V centuries. BC, this is the time of the reign of perfect forms and classics. This style was an ornament and emphasized the majesty and monumentality of the composition of buildings of that time, their beauty and uniqueness of architecture. The typical and oldest Doric temple is in Greece, it is the Temple of Hera in the famous Olympia. His age is the 7th c. BC. E. It was erected in a picturesque area on the southern slopes of Kroniy hill.

The temple is built according to all the rules of early Doric architecture with a clearly defined orientation from west to east, has a slightly elongated shape. Periptery has a certain number of columns. They give a special color to the fact that they are different in carving, proportions and smallest details. Originally they were made of wood, but later they were gradually replaced by stone ones. This happened for a considerable period of time, almost from the antiquity to the Roman period, and this, in turn, affected the carving, which also underwent changes, depending on the trends in the development of architectural styles.
