Black screen and cursor when loading Windows: what to do?

Despite all the attractiveness of the tenth version of the Windows operating system, after installing it or installing updates frequently enough you can meet the moments when instead of the expected system loading appears a black screen and a cursor, which sometimes may be absent. What is the reason for this phenomenon and how to deal with it, read on.

Black screen and cursor when you start Windows 10: what's the reason?

In general, for all Windows operating systems such a problem is usually a consequence of the incorrect operation of the video adapter, even though when the computer is turned on the BIOS signals that the system is OK and all devices are working normally (this is determined by a long signal from the system speaker ).

But not everything is so simple. The operating system itself is such that the graphics accelerator does not always directly relate to the problem that a black screen appears at startup. What to do, not everyone knows. And meanwhile, it's worth paying attention to some components of the OS itself. First of all, this is an incorrect work or malfunction in the operation of the explorer.exe service, disabled quick start, activated re-licensing, outdated, incorrectly installed or missing video card drivers.

System Restore

The black screen and the cursor at start of Windows 10 can be removed by several methods. However, the simplest solution can be forced shutdown of a computer or laptop with a subsequent reboot (the method is, of course, quite barbarous). But after this, either a hard disk check may occur for system files and bad sectors, or the system recovery tool will start working.

In the second case, all operations will be performed automatically without user intervention. It is very likely that after half an hour of waiting, depending on the hardware configuration, everything will return to normal. If this solution does not work, you can use either the installation disc or the recovery disc (or USB flash drive), but you need to take care of creating such a media in advance.

Return to the old system

If the tenth version was installed over the existing one in the form of an update (for example, Windows 7), you can use the tool to return to the old OS (only if the 30-day period has not expired since the installation).

To do this, enter the settings section and select the update and security section there, then use the appropriate line.

By the way, after that, a black screen and cursor may appear when you start Windows 7 (meaning the situation after returning to the old OS). And here the reason should be found already in the graphics accelerator drivers.

Problem: black screen when the system starts. Updating video card drivers

Updating video card drivers is a very effective method. Often it helps in situations where two cards are installed in the system - discrete and integrated. Basically, glitches affect discrete cards.

In this case, you can switch to an integrated accelerator. In parallel, you will have to reinstall or update the drivers of the main adapter (it is desirable to completely remove them first). This is done in the "Task Manager" by calling the appropriate commands in the PKM menu.

Safe Mode and Command Prompt

Black screen and cursor when you start Windows 7 or 10 can be removed by another universal method, which many computer users do not know about. It is necessary to use the command console (no difference, in the loaded system or when starting from removable media).

In the installed system loaded in Safe Mode, the command line must be run as administrator, when boot from a disk or USB flash drive, no choice is required. The console writes the line bcdedit / set {globalsettings} advancedoptions true, after which it will be possible to select the tools to work with the system when restarting.

The command line in the current system is called via the "Run" menu with the cmd combination, in the recovery console on the removable media, use Shift + F10.

In the console itself, you need to register sfc / scannow and wait for the integrity check of the system files to be completed. Perhaps this procedure will help. And it's true, well, do not overwrite the entire loader and the boot area (although it's easy enough).

Restart the explorer.exe service

Another option faced by users trying to understand why the black screen and the cursor hang permanently is related to the Explorer service (not to be confused with Explorer).

Alternatively, if the system still comes to your senses, you can use the restart process (if the screen is hanging, you will have to act blindly). Then you need to call the "Task Manager", complete the explorer.exe process through the PKM menu, and then start again. There is also a quick restart command in the menu, but I think that it is not effective enough, so it's better to make a complete end of the process first, and only then restart.

You can use another method. For normal loading at start, press the space several times, and then the Tab key five times.

Enabling Quick Launch

Of course, it is desirable to perform all actions on setting up the system in a safe mode (this is not mandatory, but recommended).

But the black screen and the cursor Windows 10 may appear even when installing the power scheme, which for some reason has failed. In this case, you need to enter the appropriate section from the "Control Panel" or call it from the PCM menu on the battery icon on the laptop. On the main page, you just need to tick the quick launch line when you exit hibernate mode or if you are on hibernation (if they are enabled).

Disabling Re-Activation

The black screen and the cursor can also be a consequence of the activated re-activation service. Accordingly, the solution is to turn it off.

Using "Explorer" or any other file manager, you need to enable hidden objects and find the Windows Activation Technologies directory. In 64-bit systems, it is located directly in the Windows directory, on systems with 32-bit architecture it should be searched in the System32 folder. Next, you need to delete both the folder and all its contents (if you delete the entire directory at once, you will have to manually delete items inside it). After that you need to perform a full reboot of the system. Perhaps, after that, the black screen and the user's cursor will not bother anymore.

Similar actions can be performed in the services section (stop and disable the start of the process), but it will take more time.

Summary results

Here, in fact, and all the methods to find a solution in such an impartial situation. Of course, not all aspects related to the fact that instead of loading the system a black screen and cursor appears, however these are the most common situations. And the fact that the drivers of the video accelerator are to blame for everything is not always the main reason (unless there are conflicts between the system and previously installed drivers, if Windows 10 left them unchanged during installation). Here, as we see, the question is also in the system itself. No matter how good it may be, there are shortages in it too. By the way, at the worst, you can just try to change the resolution of the stationary monitor from its own menu. Hope to fix the problem, of course, a little, but, as they say, what the hell is not joking ...

But seriously, when it does not help at all, try to overwrite the boot sector using the following combinations:

  • First bootrec.exe / fixmbr;
  • Then - bootrec.exe / fixboot;
  • And finally - bootrec.exe / rebuildbcd.

This operation helps in 99% of cases out of 100. When loading from a removable media, a notification can be issued that these commands are not supported. It's okay, you can ignore them or use the sfc / scannow system file check command, chkdsk / x / f / r, and the shutdown -t 0 -r -f command to reboot and test the system health before executing them.

If none of the options are suitable, you will have to check the system for viruses by downloading from a storage medium like Kaspersky Rescue Disk, and if the system comes to life, use the Microsoft Fix It utility, as well as an additional tool - DLL Suite for restoring, downloading and integrating into Windows environment 10 missing or incorrectly installed dynamic libraries.
