Types of fonts and their classification. Using different types of fonts

To date, many fonts have been developed, and it is difficult for a layman to understand their diversity and purpose. There are several classifications of outlines. They are divided according to their purpose and origin.

Types of fonts and their historical classification

From the point of view of the outline, all the fonts that are used in modern times, have evolved from those developed by masters in the Middle Ages before. We can conditionally divide them into three large groups:

• Antique.
• Egyptian.
• Grotesque.

Each of them has its own style of outline, which copies the manner used in antiquity, Ancient Egypt and during the Renaissance. They are also divided into subgroups, which take into account the size of strokes, penumbra and other features of writing.

Types of fonts and their classification

The most common is the different systematization of all types of letters and numbers used. It is worth dwelling on in detail.

1. Basic Fonts

These types of fonts differ in the severity of the outline and the correct proportions in the writing of letters and numbers. They refer to a strict classical style. They do not use ornaments and ornate decorations, only serifs.
Basic or classical types of font for registration are used in business letters, advertising booklets of companies with such areas of work as medicine, construction, education. You can often see the basic outline in leaflets.

2. Thematic Fonts

In this group are collected the inscriptions from modern to vintage. This association is not accidental, since all these types of fonts have a certain focus. They are used on drawings, for the design of posters of various subjects (festive, children's, agitational and others).

A vivid example of this style is the inscription in the style of the design of Soviet agitational posters. This font does not need to make out large arrays of text, but it will look best in the headlines of printed products. "Soviet" style is also used for logos and slogans. All thematic fonts are applied based on the destination area. In other places they will look inappropriate.

3. Hand Inscription

This is a group of Latin, Cyrillic and other characters, written with an imitation of a letter in pencil, pen, graffiti and other types of hand-painted. In its style, this is a large group. Here it is possible to meet as strokes with a lot of ornaments and connections between the letters (necessary for the text to look holistic) and careless in execution of the types of hand writing imitating printed letters made by chalk on the slate.

Calligraphic fonts are often used for headlines, writing slogans and decorating. They perform decorative functions and are not suitable for the execution of the main text.

4. Language Stylistics

Kinds of fonts in this group take as their foundation the outline from various written cultures: Arabic, Chinese, Greek, Roman and others. If you study this group on the basis of the Cyrillic alphabet, then in some cases it is quite difficult to distinguish words in Russian from Chinese or Arabic.

Most often the design in the style of ethnic design is used on signs, in printing products, when decorating covers and in book titles. You can find examples of this in the catalogs of restaurants of Chinese and Japanese cuisine.

5. Distortion of the form

Styles of inscription that belong to this group are distinguished by unusual shapes, changed proportions and outlines. All these species can be divided into several small groups:

• Three-dimensional.
• Digital.
• Triangular.
• Square.
• Letter.
• Rounded.

Most often, the decorative functions in these fonts are pronounced and even in the classical form they stand out among the basic varieties. These varieties look good in large inscriptions and titles.

The above classification is suitable for publishers and developers of posters, logos and websites. Thanks to it, you can create a detailed catalog by sections and use it to select the writing of different text fragments.
Different types of fonts can be combined to produce a catchy and aesthetic text. In addition to using in relevant places, it is also important to choose a style of outline based on the texture of the base. A good-looking font on the poster or website may look ugly on the texture under the skin. So, vintage outlines look best on aged and coarse paper, and modern fonts come up to a glossy backdrop.

Poster design

First of all, to select the external appearance of the textual design of the poster, you need to pay attention to the layout. Will this be just a text fragment without illustrations or will the outline add a photo or a picture? It is important to consider the orientation of the poster:

• Poster.
• Advertising.
• Announcement of the event for children.
• Social advertisement.

The words on any of the posters should attract attention and help him stand out among hundreds of similar ones. It is possible to divide all posters into two groups by type of outline:

• Typographical (typing).
• Graphic (hand-written).

The first posters are used for educational activities, as well as for reporting on events (posters). It is best to choose a suitable font, as well as its color and size, together with a specialist printer.

The most interesting types of fonts for posters are used when creating them in a graphic style. Here the scope for the designer's imagination is wider: in addition to type-setting types of inscriptions, one can meet the imitation of a hand-written signature and the use of other decorative elements.

Features of using fonts in a tattoo

Typically, for the creation of tattoos in recent years, Latin is used and writing in a vintage style of manual signature. These types of fonts for tattoo have become the basis for the most stylish and fashionable ornaments. Masters offer such a choice not without reason - Latin letters and English on the body look very beautiful, and decorated with additional monograms and patterns, they create a seamless pattern. At first glance, this tattoo can not be read, but those who know the language can take a closer look and decipher the inscribed word or phrase.

As an exception, mostly in men, one can find on the body a modern basic and even a church font (Cyrillic alphabet). Look well such options, when the phrase fits the style of writing and in general the tattoo looks harmonious. It is not recommended to combine several versatile fonts. Also, do not make too small a line of tattoo, because over time it is slightly blurred and can turn into a dark unreadable spot. Good readability is also required for the use of fonts in tattoos.
