Orsha - Vitebsk: train, bus, train

Two of these Belarusian cities share a distance of eighty-five kilometers. One of them - Vitebsk - is a city of regional importance, the second - Orsha - of regional importance. However, Orsha is not an ordinary regional center, it is one of the ten largest cities in Belarus. Between the cities of Orsha, Vitebsk there is good both railway and bus communication.

On the banks of the Dnieper

Orsha is located in the southeast of the Vitebsk region on the banks of the Dnieper River (the third in Europe by the area of the basin), or rather on the banks of two rivers. Here flows the Dnieper tributary - the river Orsitsa.

The first mention of Orsha was found in the "Tale of Bygone Years" in connection with military events dating from 1067.

Today Orsha is a large industrial center of the republic. Twenty-six enterprises work here. The population of the city is about one hundred forty thousand people.

Convenient location of Orsha allowed it to become a major railway junction not only of Belarus, but also of Europe. Through the city there are trains to Warsaw, Berlin, Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kiev and many other cities. The city of Dvina

This is how Vitebsk can be called, which was founded in the place where two rivers merge - the Western Dvina and Vitba. This is the northernmost regional center of Belarus.

As the legend says, the city was founded by Princess Olga in 974.

Today it is located on an area of almost 125 hectares. The population is 372 thousand people.

In Vitebsk there are 233 objects included in the state list of historical and cultural values. However, the world fame of the city is connected with the names of avant-garde artists Mark Shagal, Yudel Pan, Kazimir Malevich, and also with the "Slavic Bazaar."

Attractions of Orsha and Vitebsk

Having visited Orsha, one can not help looking at outstanding monuments of architecture and history. In the first place, tourists are attracted by the Jesuit collegium - an architectural monument of the seventeenth century, which is also located in the central part of the city. On the tower of the collegium there are watches, at a certain time they play beautiful melodies. By and large, Orsha can be called a city of monasteries. In this city they were many: Bernardine, Basilian, Franciscans, Trinitarian, Dominican ... Among the Orthodox, the most famous was the Holy Epiphany Kutine Monastery (1623). All these architectural monuments are partially preserved. But there is a watermill, a castle, a memorial complex "Katyusha" and others.

Arriving from Orsha on the morning train, you can devote a whole day to the sights of Vitebsk. Although they will not be examined in one day, of course.
